Job Opportunity - Research Manager, Centre for Climate Justice UBC

December 16, 2021

Full Time Research Manager for Centre for Climate Justice

Application deadline: January 10

The University of British Columbia has just approved the creation of a Centre for Climate Justice.

The Centre for Climate Justice at UBC advances transformative social, political and economic changes necessary to address the climate crisis and other environmental injustices, all in the face of trenchant inequalities within our communities and around the world. Supporting collaborative, interdisciplinary and intersectional research across diverse knowledge systems and geographical divides, the CCJ is a place of translation, mobilization and investigation.

Co-led by Naomi Klein and Candis Callison (on leave), along with an executive committee of climate justice and Indigenous rights scholars, the centre will focus on research developed in partnership with frontline communities and movements to advance an environmentally just and equitable future.

At the CCJ, we believe that rigorous research can expand the boundaries of the possible and is part of a thriving climate justice ecosystem. We also know that the academy holds no monopoly on knowledge holding and climate justice depends on scholars taking leadership from those most impacted.

We are brand new and as the centre’s first full-time staff member, the Research Manager will play a key role in refining our mission and developing early projects, working with the leadership team to help us grow roots close to home, as well as branches — into diverse sectors and across national borders.

The most important qualifications for this role are:

- A proven track record applying for and receiving research grants (e.g. from Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and foundations), ideally those that involve multiple partners.

- A proven track record of working with grassroots social movements and/or frontline communities.

- Experience developing systems to lead and supervise a complex team of researchers.

- Experience in financial management and budgeting.

The full job description is available here. However, the above qualifications are the most important, and the hiring committee values a diverse set of life experiences and is well aware that no one person will possess all of the qualifications listed in the full job description. In addition, though the list of tasks may seem daunting, the Research Manager will have support for administration and communications, as well as a highly engaged team of faculty and students.

Applicants must apply through UBC’s online portal by uploading a cover letter that addresses the key qualifications listed above and an abbreviated CV. The link to the application portal will be posted here on January 3. NOTE: applications will be accepted on the online portal only between January 3, 2022 and January 10, 2022. Candidates will not be able to access the portal until Jan 3.

If you are passionate about climate justice research, and a systems-thinker who is confident in leading a complex team and adept at landing grants, we encourage you to apply and build this new research centre with us.

This job is based on the Vancouver campus of UBC.

Start date is immediate or TBD.

Starting salary is $70,000 plus benefits (negotiable depending on experience).

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Metis, Inuit, or Indigenous person.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
