Volunteer Opportunity - Tutor, Pathways to Education, SFU Surrey TD Community Engagement Centre
Inspire local youth to complete their studies, fulfill their potential and thrive!
The SFU Surrey–TD Community Engagement Centre and Pathways to Education are looking for people who want to make a difference in the lives of local high school students.
Pathways to Education is a program for youth in low-income communities that helps students graduate from high school and successfully transition into post-secondary education, training, or employment. Pathways addresses systemic barriers to education by providing leadership, expertise, and a community-based program proven to lower dropout rates. This program is being offered for Surrey youth, and will provide a range of supports for youth, including free tutoring, social and mentoring activities, one-to-one educational support, bus passes, grocery cards, scholarships and positive relationships with adult role models.
Please note that this program will be running in-person. Volunteers will be required to follow the Pathways to Education COVID-19 Health and Safety Plan (which will be reviewed during the Orientation). Volunteers must also provide proof of full vaccination status.
Your role:
As a Pathways volunteer, you will provide tutoring and mentoring to Surrey youth who face systemic barriers to educational success. We are looking for individuals who are excited by the opportunity to support youth in their high school studies, and who are looking for experience leading and facilitating group activities. Training is provided.
In this role, you will gain experience:
- Providing effective tutoring support to high school students in at least one core subject (Math, English, Science, Geography, Social Sciences).
- Productively engaging in conversation with learners, using a strength-based model to determine academic support needs.
- Adapting tutoring strategies to respond appropriately to different learner needs.
- Working collaboratively with program staff to support youth learning needs.
- Participating in inclusive group academic and mentoring activities.
- Introducing and modeling positive decision-making strategies to youth.
- Demonstrating effective mentoring techniques such as active listening, coaching, advising, and providing feedback when working with youth.

Program Logistics:
The program will run for the annual cycle of October 2022 – June 2023. For the Spring semester, new volunteers will start in mid-January.
Volunteers are encouraged to be involved for more than one semester so that they full take advantage of all the professional development opportunities and trainings provided by Pathways to Education throughout the year.
This program will be offered on the following dates, times, and locations:
- Tuesdays at Guildford Park Secondary (10707 146 Street, Surrey) from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
- Thursdays at Guildford Park Secondary (10707 146 Street, Surrey) from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m
- Mondays at Kwantlen Park Secondary (10441 132 Street, Surrey) from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
- Wednesdays at Kwantlen Park Secondary (10441 132 Street, Surrey) from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Volunteer Orientation Sessions:
If you would like to begin volunteering on January 9th, the following orientation session is mandatory for you:

- Time: 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

If you are ok to begin volunteering in early February instead, there will be a second orientation session in the last week of January (details TBA).
Program Intro and Volunteer Social:
If you missed the first orientation session (in December), join this Program Intro and Volunteer Social, led by SFU, to learn more about the program, meet other volunteers and get support with completing your Pathways application.

Requirements
- Must obtain and provide Pathways to Education with a valid Criminal Record Check;
- Be ready to volunteer in-person and follow all COVID-19 Health procedures;
- Provide proof of full vaccination status;
- Must have a strong ability to take initiative, independently interact with program participants and be proactive. Can determine what needs to be done and do it before being asked to;
- Be friendly, welcoming, and nonjudgmental;
- Thrive in a positive, progressive atmosphere;
- Respect and value the diversity of communities and individuals;
- Be punctual, communicative, and responsive.
