Research Assistant (6 Vacancies)

The Opportunity:

The research team, led by Drs. Ian Young, Jordan Tustin, Binyam Desta, and Johanna Sanchez, of the School of Occupational and Public Health, Toronto Metropolitan University, is conducting a national cohort study to investigate the burden of recreational water illness from swimming and other activities at beaches in Canada. Working under the supervision of the research team, the Research Assistants (x6) will contribute to the following activities:

  • Recruit and conduct in-person surveys with recreational water users approximately 2-4 days per week during the summer (June to early September)
  • Enter and review participant survey and consent data in a web-based survey platform
  • Take water samples and field measurements on recruitment days and deliver them to a courier or lab for analysis
  • On non-recruitment days, provide other administrative support to the project team as required

Study locations:

  • Two (x2) of the positions will be based in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Ontario, with Research Assistants being required to conduct the field work in Port Perry (~85 km northeast of Toronto).
  • Two (x2) positions will be remotely based in Manitoba, with Research Assistants being required to conduct the field work at Grand Beach (~100 km north of Winnipeg).
  • Two (x2) positions will be remotely based in Vancouver, BC, with Research Assistants being required to conduct the field work at one to two City of Vancouver beaches.

Qualifications:

Key qualifications required:

  • Be enrolled in or recently completed an undergraduate degree in public health, health sciences, environmental science, psychology, social sciences, or a related field
  • Ability to work on weekends and holidays
  • Outgoing personality with strong communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in teams
  • High level of attention to detail and highly adaptable
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience working with survey software is an asset
  • Access to a personal vehicle with a license is required for the Manitoba and Ontario locations
