JOB SUMMARY

The Research Assistant will provide support to a research project that examines the social determinants of health associated with long COVID in British Columbia. The incumbent will be involved in a wide range of research activities including literature searches, coordination of activities with partners and stakeholder groups, data management and analysis, and knowledge translation.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

Reports to Executive Director, Research at the BC Centre for Disease Control, who is also a Clinical Professor at the UBC School of Population and Public Health. Liaises with other UBC-CDC team members, BCCDC researchers, physicians, statisticians, and epidemiologists.

WORK PERFORMED

 

·         Assists in the writing and preparation of scientific manuscripts.

·         Conducts literature review

·         Conducts data curation and analysis.

·         Professionally engages and communicates with team members and partner community groups.

·         Identifies issues with project and suggests solutions

·         Develops timelines to ensure tasks are completed on time, reports on progress, and troubleshoots to ensure deadlines are met.

·         May be asked to participate in other ongoing studies.

·         Any other duties as required.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

Due to the sensitive nature of the work carried out, this individual must understand and exemplify the ethics of confidentiality, sensitivity, and respect when communicating all study information. The Research Assistant must be exceptionally detail-orientated and organized and able to follow detailed instructions. They must be able to prioritize tasks to ensure that time-sensitive duties are completed in priority. This person must also be self-directed, able to excel in a team environment, know personal limitations and take the initiative to ask for assistance when needed.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work under general supervision of the Research Scientist; receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems. Work will be reviewed against task objectives and conformity to standards. The incumbent should be able to identify circumstances that require consultation with the supervisor or other team members and be able to seek out that consultation.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

None.

QUALIFICATIONS

·         MPH, MSc. Or PhD students in epidemiology or public health with strong quantitative skills preferred.

·         Experience in SAS, R, or any statistical software is preferred.

·         Some knowledge of qualitative research methods applicable to health research an asset.

·         Experience with UBC Workday, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, and analysis software an asset.

·         Strong computer skills required, including the ability to effectively use Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook at an intermediate level.

·         Strong attention to detail, organizational and interpersonal skills.

·         Ability to effectively prioritize tasks, adapt to changing priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines.

·         Ability to learn new software, research methods, and work routines.

·         Ability to exercise appropriate tact, discretion and confidentiality in all matters.

·         Ability to exercise sound judgement, responsibility, and maintain confidentiality.

·         Ability to communicate kindly and effectively verbally and in writing.

·         Ability to work effectively independently and within a collaborative team environment.
