Research Assistant Opportunity

Project title and description:

Renewing and Re-energizing the Master of Public Health (MPH) Core Curriculum: Decolonizing and Indigenizing Training in Indigenous Health, Anti-Racism, Cultural Safety and Allyship.

Simon Fraser University’s Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications for a Research Assistant appointment to help evaluate the Indigenous Health Module within the Master of Public Health (MPH) HSCI 900 (Core Concepts and Practice for Public Health I) and HSCI 901 (Core Concepts and Practice for Public Health II) courses. Specifically, this project will evaluate the value of the Indigenous Health Module’s relevance and impact within students’ practicum placements, as a contribution towards their future professional practice.

Research assistant responsibilities include:

• Helping with coordinating and hosting an engagement meeting with Indigenous stakeholders

• Supporting the development of surveys and interview guides

• Attending sessions of the Indigenous Health Module and taking field notes during the class discussions

• Recording notes during student focus group discussions

• Transcribing recordings of interviews and focus groups

• Assisting in analyzing survey data, written reflections, and interview transcripts

• Supporting the preparation and reporting project findings (e.g. conference presentations, journal manuscripts)

• Attending regular meetings with the project leads

• Project administration

Required qualifications and skills:

• Currently enrolled in a graduate or upper level undergraduate program at SFU;

• Experience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis;

• Strong writing skills; and

• Excellent and demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures and traditions— Indigenous students are strongly encouraged to apply and self-identify.

Rate of pay:

$20 per hour (including vacation and statutory holiday pay, no medical or dental benefits) – based on experience, qualifications and degree program.

Total appointment hours:

Up to 200 hours spread over the Fall 2019, Spring 2020, and Summer 2020 semesters.
