Job Opportunity - Health Promotion & Engagement Strategist - SFU Student Services Health and Counselling

The Health Promotion Strategist leads initiatives across the university to create environments and foster positive cultures that enhance mental health, well-being, sense of community, and overall positive experience of graduate and undergraduate students at SFU. In collaboration with the Health Promotion team and SFU Health and Counselling Services, the Strategist is responsible for designing, developing, implementing and evaluating student engagement initiatives to support institution-wide, comprehensive and systemic student mental health strategy. The Strategist initiates partnerships with campus stakeholders from across the university, including students, Faculties, the Centre for Educational Excellence (CEE), Facilities Services and other administrative and service units to build institutional momentum and embed well-being within campus culture, strategic plans and activities.

Qualifications: 

Master's degree in Health Promotion, Public Health, Health Education or a related discipline and three years of related experience in health promotion community engagement, program planning, implementation and evaluation or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the philosophies, principles, and practices of meaningful community engagement with equity-deserving populations.
  • Excellent knowledge of complex dynamics affecting mental health and well-being of university age populations, including factors related to students who identify and/or have intersectional identities as Indigenous people, Black people, people of colour, LGBTQIA2S+ people, people with disabilities or other diverse identities. 
  • Excellent knowledge of health promotion theory (e.g., Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion [WHO], Okanagan Charter, socio-ecological approach). 
  • Excellent knowledge of a settings approach to health promotion action in a higher education environment and awareness of participatory and salutogenic strategies for enhancing health and well-being.
  • Intermediate qualitative and quantitative research skills (e.g., survey development, focus group design and facilitation, data analysis and interpretation).
  • Skilled in the development, organization, implementation, and execution of engagement activities. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent leadership, innovation, project management and evaluation skills.
  • Excellent coaching, mentorship and team development skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Exceptional planning, consensus-building, and organizational (time management) abilities.
  • Excellent ability to develop relationships and partnerships and to work collaboratively at all levels and areas within the organization.
  • Proven skills in policy development, partnership building and organization change processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large complex projects with multiple stakeholders and partners.
  • Ability to work independently and in a self-directed manner.
