Paola Ardiles is a practitioner scholar who has been recognized for her innovative, collaborative and inter-sectoral approaches in health promotion research, policy and practice. She has published and contributed to numerous public health issues and is known to be a catalyst for social change. Paola was recently honoured to receive the 2017 Surrey Board of Trade- Women in Business, Social Trailblazer award.

For the past eight years, Paola has been an active volunteer and board member of the Public Health Association of British Columbia. She now serves as the Past President of this non-for-profit organization, which advocates for healthy public policies and public health workforce development.

Paola’s passion is to build partnerships and facilitate dialogue in order to foster the development of practical and creative upstream solutions to tackle complex health issues. In 2012, Paola was awarded the  Dr. Nancy Hall Public Policy Leadership Award of Distinction for her local, provincial and national work to advance the mental health agenda by applying an upstream approach.

Paola founded Bridge for Health in 2013 as a local and global self-organized network promoting social innovation and community health. In 2016, Bridge for Health became a cooperative association with the mission to advance wellbeing practices in the business sector. Bridge for Health Cooperative received SFU’s 2017 Coast Capital Savings Venture-Social Impact prize for its efforts to advance social sustainability in the workplace.

Paola received the inaugural 2017 Health Promotion Canada's Mid Career national award and was recognized as one of TD Bank's 10 most influential Hispanic Canadians. Most recently, Paola received SFU President’s Social Media Newsmaker Award for her ability to advance social change online to help highlight that health is a fundamental right, and that everyone has a role to play in creating healthy communities, schools and workplaces.

Research Interests

Paola has worked on collaborative research initiatives related to public health capacity building and policy in various public health areas including mental health promotion, health equity, health promoting universities, health literacy, immigrant & refugee health, women’s mental health, public health workforce, workplace health, and social inclusion.

Teaching Interests

Paola developed and teaches a new curriculum on Health Promotion in the Canadian Context for the Master of Public Health program. She provides mentorship and supervision for practicums in the area of health promotion. In 2014, Paola was profiled as a faculty champion for the SFU Healthy Campus initiative for supporting real-life learning to improve well-being in the learning environment.

As of September 2016 Paola is teaching the new Health Change Lab at SFU Surrey in partnership with RADIUS Social Innovation Lab, Beedie School of Business. The Health Change Lab is an experiential program to help students identify community health challenges and co-design innovative and entrepreneurial solutions.
