Throughout the pandemic, quick access to scientific findings has been essential to keeping the public informed. The use of preprints—scientific manuscripts posted on open access sources like bioRxiv and medRxiv prior to peer review—was quickly adopted by media outlets. SFU researchers caution that while access to research is imperative, publishing unverified science comes with risks.

Svitlana Matviyenko’s students know that if an air-raid siren sounds during their class, she will have to take cover. The Simon Fraser University (SFU) communication professor is teaching her theory of communication graduate seminar remotely this term, after returning home to Ukraine last February to care for her mother.

Developed with the support of DigiBC, the new Leadership and Agile Production Management micro-credential will equip students with a broad understanding of management and leadership through agile and hybrid methodologies. Students will develop essential skills for people management while exploring leadership management practices and tools. The industry has seen a significant shift in “how we work” and this course will address remote/hybrid work models.

Simon Fraser University (SFU) Communication Professor Ahmed Al-Rawi’s research examines the intersections between political extremism, misinformation and social media. He leads The Disinformation Project at SFU, which examines fake news discourses in Canadian news media and social media.
