Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)

  1. Partnership Engage Grant
    Description: Supports partnered research activities that inform an immediate or time-constrained need of a single, non-academic partner organization. Designed to enable partner organizations and postsecondary researchers to access each other's unique knowledge, expertise, and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.
    Deadline: December 15, 2023
    Value: $7,000 - $25,000 over one year
  2. SFU/SSHRC Small Explore Grant
    Description: Supports scholarly research in the contemporary arts, humanities, and social sciences for expenses up to a maximum of $7,000, or in teams, up to $10,000.

  3. Connection Grant
    Description: Supports events and outreach activities for short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization, often serving as a first step toward more comprehensive and longer-term projects.

  4. Insight Development Grant
    Description: Supports research in its initial stages to enable the development of new research questions as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas.

  5. Partnership Grant — Stage 1
    Description: Supports new and existing research partnerships between eligible institutions and partner organizations from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Applicants successful in Stage 1 are awarded funds to help applicants prepare a Stage 2 application (valued at up to $500,000 per year over 4-7 years, up to $2.5 million).

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)

  1. Idea to Innovate (I2I) Grant
    Description: Supports pre-competitive development of promising technology originating from the postsecondary sector through technology validation and market connection.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

  1. Project Grant
    Description: Supports research with the greatest potential for important advances across all areas of health research, including Global Health, Indigenous Health Research, Randomized Controlled Trails, Commercialization, Interdisciplinary Research, and Specific Research Areas.

Arts Councils

  1. Concept to Realization Composite
    Description: Supports the full creative cycle, from initial idea to presentation
    Deadline: rolling
    Value: Up to $60,000 per year
  2. Research and Creation
    Description: Supports the initial stages of creative project as well as artists' professional development
    Deadline: rolling
    Value: Up to $25,000 per year

Government of Canada

  1. Natural Resources Canada (NRC) Climate-Resilient Coastal Communities Program
    Description: Supports regional collaboration between communities and across sectors to co-develop coordinated actions to increase climate resilience in coastal regions. This program (2023-2028) will fund up to 25 pilot projects.
    Deadline: December 13, 2023

  2. New Frontiers in Research Fund Horizon Global Platform Competition
    Description: Supports Canadian researchers’ participation in international projects through research activities and travel for Horizon Europe projects. Deadline extension relevant to any SFU researchers named on an application to or project already funded through Horizon Europe’s Pillar II (Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness) with a deadline before September 30, 2023.

  3. New Frontiers in Research Fund Transformation Competition
    Description: Supports large-scale, Canadian-led, interdisciplinary research that addresses a major challenge with the potential to realize real and lasting change.
