Changes to Accreditation

After extensive review, the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) has elected to not pursue re-accreditation with the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) at the Bachelor’s level. This decision addresses the specific context for our programs and priorities, including the need for greater flexibility in curriculum design and the responsible use of available resources. Stepping away from CEPH accreditation at the undergraduate level allows FHS to continue evolving our programs to better meet the needs of our students and the rapidly changing field of public health.

Our Master of Public Health (MPH) program will remain fully CEPH-accredited. Graduate students in the MPH program will continue to benefit from all the standards and recognition associated with CEPH accreditation.

Quality of instruction, learning opportunities, and the value of an SFU Health Sciences Bachelor degree will not be impacted by this change. FHS remains one of the top Canadian universities to offer an undergraduate degree in public health.

FHS remains deeply committed to providing a high-quality educational experience grounded in excellence in teaching and learning, interdisciplinary research, and community engagement. Our faculty, curriculum, and student support systems will continue to uphold rigorous academic standards and prepare graduates for a wide range of careers and further education pathways in public health and related fields.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why are the Bachelor programs no longer CEPH-accredited?

This change was made to allow the Faculty to conduct a broad examination of program goals, curriculum, student learning experiences, and graduate outcomes as it plans for the future of undergraduate public health education. The faculty will continue to conduct its own institutional quality assurance processes, comprehensive reviews and renewals of its undergraduate programs as part of its commitment to continuous improvement, academic excellence and responsiveness to student needs.

Does this affect the quality of the Bachelor’s degrees?

No. The quality of the programs, teaching, and learning outcomes remain the same. Our commitment to academic excellence, research, and student success continues unchanged.

Is the MPH program still accredited?

Yes. The Master of Public Health (MPH) program remains fully CEPH accredited.

Will this impact my ability to get a job or apply to graduate school?

For most students, this change will not affect employment or graduate school opportunities. Employers and graduate programs consider a range of factors, including skills, experiences, and academic performance. Students interested in specific professional pathways are encouraged to speak with an advisor.

What does this mean for current students?

Current students can continue their studies as planned. There is no change to degree requirements, course offerings, or expected timelines for completion.

What does this mean for prospective students?

Prospective students can expect the same high-quality undergraduate experience, with continued opportunities for experiential learning, research engagement, and career preparation.

Will this impact the cost of my degree?

No, your tuition and fees will remain the same.
