The Ethics Bowl Canada

The Ethics Bowl season is now officially open! We will be hosting at least two events this year---and here is some information about the first one.

Please consider joining us for the 2023 Friendly Ethics Bowl at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue on Saturday, November 25th (9 AM-4:30 PM) for a full day of dialogue by high school students across the Lower Mainland. The Ethics Bowl is a discussion based event, where students try to constructively engage with each other to tackle some of the most important ethical issues facing our society today! This year's theme for the Friendly Ethics Bowl is "Ethics in the Professions and the Sciences."

If you would like to volunteer as a judge or a moderator, please fill out the survey here. If you aren't sure yet, read on to learn more about the event, or email Cem at sfubowl@sfu.ca with any questions.

About the Ethics Bowl
An Ethics Bowl is both a collaborative and competitive event, where teams of highschool students analyze and discuss ethical dilemmas. They imagine, criticize, and compare bold strategies, and may even amend their original positions when faced with convincing arguments. Students have opportunities to pose and respond to probing questions, which results in a deepening awareness of the stakes and principles that animate the discussion. The Ethics Bowl is a great opportunity for students to learn about critical thinking and constructive dialogue.

Time Commitment / Expectations
For this event, we need 15 judges and 5 moderators. It is an approximately 10-hour commitment total:
1 hour to review the cases and to watch the training videos,
1 hour to attend an online training session on November 16th or 21st,
8 hours on the day of the competition, which will run from 9:00am to 4:30pm (this will fly by because you will be having so much fun the entire time!)

If you aren't familiar with the format, don't worry: we have excellent resources to get you up to speed, and there will always be an experienced volunteer in the room who can show you the ropes.

FAQ

What is the difference between a judge and a moderator?
A judge will score the teams' presentations, commentaries and responses, along dimensions of the sophistication of ethical reasoning, arguing well, acknowledging and dealing with complexity, and constructively/critically engaging with other points of view. During the judges' Q&A, a judge will also ask a question to the team.

A moderator will time the teams' presentations and judges' questions, move the teams and judges through the different phases of a match, and announce match results to the room and the organizers. They will also report any rules violations to the organizers.

Do I need to be an ethicist to participate?
Not at all! A lot of our volunteers are not ethicists, and the students are instructed to present their views without a lot of name-dropping. If the competition format sounds interesting at all, you can volunteer!

Can I volunteer for only part of the day?
Yes---for ease of logistical planning, I will prioritize volunteers that can be there the entire day. But if you can only make part of the day, let me know!

What's in it for me?
If you are a student, Ethics Bowl makes an excellent CV line---it is already very popular in the US, and it is spreading like wildfire in Canada. It is a great way to stretch those "outreach" muscles. Also, you will get lunch for free on Saturday!

Otherwise, you get to participate in a very cool event, and restore your faith in the future of humanity by watching highschool students intelligently discuss tough topics.
