FRENCH MODULE
Did you graduate from a French immersion program or study French at high school or university? Have you lived or studied in a Francophone environment? If so, you may want to consider the French Module in the PDP.
Qualified French teachers are in extremely high demand in all the French programs (Core French, French Immersion and Programme francophone) in British Columbia and in Canada. The PDP - French Module focuses on the specific context of teaching in French in B.C. and prepares you to teach French or teach other subjects in French.
Choosing the French Module at SFU may give you access to bursaries and awards specific to studies in French. You will also have the opportunity to develop your network within the francophone community as well as within the French teaching community.
DESIGNED FOR
The Professional Development Program (PDP) - French Module is designed for aspiring French-speaking school teachers to teach Core French or French Immersion at the elementary or secondary level in British Columbia. All candidates applying to the PDP - French Module must meet one of the various French language requirements.
In addition to exciting career prospects, the French Module offers a learning experience with linguistic and identity support.
FRENCH MODULE PROGRAM OPTIONS
Exchange and Dual Program with Université de Tours (France):
The Exchange Term and Dual Program at l'Université de Tours in France allow to gain specific knowledge in teaching French as foreign language by taking graduate-level courses at the Faculté des Lettres et Langues de l'Université de Tours during the first term in the Fall. Dual Program students will also obtain a Master en Didactique du français langue étrangère (FLE) from the Université de Tours (UT).
BEd as a second degree – Minor in French Education:
Possibility to complete during your PDP this internationally recognized credential at no additional time or cost. The Minor in French Education also adequately prepares you to teach in French in minority settings.
Elective Course:
EDUC 410 - LINGUISTIC AND PROFESSIONAL IDENTITIES OF BI/PLURILINGUAL TEACHERS OF FRENCH
4 UNITS
1 COURSE PER WEEK - TAKEN AT THE FIRST PDP TERM (FALL)
In this course, you will be invited to reflect upon your identity as speakers of French as an additional language and how this identity might intersect with the construction of your professional identity as teachers of French. The ways student-teachers (you) perceive yourself as professionals impact your development as well as your interactions with your colleagues, your pedagogical choices and your classroom practices. Understanding the complexities of your identity will give you access to a sense of ownership of language.
Some parts of the course will be taught in French and others in English. This course was designed and is recommended for PDP students with a level of French equivalent to DELF B1 or B2.
Units earned for this course, taken in the fall during the first term of the program, count towards the Minor in French Education and as a summer course for EDUC 404.
Course-Level educational goals:
- Explore and reflect upon theories related to bilingualism and identity.
- Develop an understanding the tensions around the legitimacy of teachers for whom French is an additional language.
- Participate and contribute to the construction of a professional and linguistic community.
- Reflect and demonstrate an understanding of one’s own linguistic journey from learner to teacher.
- Engage in language-learning activities that strengthen one’s ability to use French in varying and challenging contexts, including the interaction with more fluent speakers, in Education-specific topics.
- Reflect upon how the taking and choosing of linguistic risks can help empower individuals in the construction of their identity.
HOW TO REGISTER:
You will be contacted at the beginning of the EDUC 400 session (September) for registration procedures.
