French Module
Did you graduate from a French immersion program or study French at high school or university? Have you lived or studied in a Francophone environment? If so, you may want to consider the French Module in the PDP.
Qualified French teachers are in extremely high demand in all the French programs (Core French, French Immersion and Programme francophone) in British Columbia and in Canada. The PDP - French Module focuses on the specific context of teaching in French in B.C. and prepares you to teach French or teach other subjects in French.
Choosing the French Module at SFU will give you access to bursaries and awards specific to studies in French. You will also have the opportunity to develop your network within the francophone community as well as within the French teaching community.
Designed For
The Professional Development Program (PDP) - French Module is designed for aspiring French-speaking school teachers to teach Core French, French Immersion or Francophone Program at the elementary or secondary level in British Columbia. All candidates applying to the PDP - French Module must meet one of the various French language requirements.
In addition to exciting career prospects, the French Module offers a learning experience with linguistic identity support through the course EDUC 486 – Identity(ies), Language(s) and Teaching: The Challenges of Bilingual/Plurilingual Teachers in a Minority Setting. Through a bursary offered by SFU's Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs, this course is available to PDP students who have completed the DELF B1 and B2 levels. EDUC 486 allows students to obtain three extra credits outside of the certification program requirements and runs during the first semester of the program.
Advanced Proficiency Option
In addition to the French Module based on Burnaby campus, we have a partnership with the B.C. Francophone School District, le Conseil scolaire francophone (CSF), SD93. This Module dans la communauté (community-based module) provides the opportunity for students with an advanced level of French proficiency to be based at École Anne-Hébert for a part of the program.
Bursaries Available
Student teachers in the PDP - French Module may also be eligible for bursaries and awards specific to studies in French at SFU (up to $9,000)
Student Stories
