Teaching Assistants

Course Details:

HSCI 424 D100 (BBY) – Strategic Applications of GIS in Health  

  • Instructor: Dr. Ryan Allen
  • Lecture: Tu 12:30 PM-2:20 PM and Th 12:30 PM-2:20 PM

Course Specific Information:

HSCI 424 studies the relation of health problems to the distribution of markers of exposure, susceptibility, and health impact, and resulting risk management strategies for intervention, mitigation, and disease prevention. The TA should have extensive experience with ArcGIS and knowledge of spatial data sources at SFU and beyond. 

 

HSCI 842 G100 (BBY) – Indigenous Health in Canada

  • Instructor: Olivia Maracle
  • Lecture: Th 2:30 PM-5:20 PM

Course Specific Information:

HSCI 842 requires an understanding of Indigenous communities living in Canada, including the differences between western and Indigenous definitions of health and wellness, and the inter-generational effects of colonization that continue to impact Indigenous communities. Applicants should also demonstrate openness to other ways of knowing, sharing, and learning that includes notes of creativity and presentation innovation. This course priorities Indigenous community guided research, so an interest in Indigenous-led initiatives to restore wellness is vital. 

 

The number of Base Units (BU) will depend on the course enrolment. The BU range is 3.17 – 4.17.

Salary and conditions are determined by the TSSU Collective Bargaining Agreement

 

First day of classes is January 5, 2026, and last day of exams is April 25, 2026.

Qualifications for the TA positions in HSCI courses include experience with course subject matter obtained either via successful coursework completed in the area or direct practical experience. Qualified TAs will also have demonstrated proficiency in English communication skills, both oral and written.

Applicants will not be considered for a position in a course in which they are currently enrolled.

Instructors will first review applications that have ranked their course as preferred; in the event that no job offer is made based on applicant preferences, instructors will then begin to review applications that have not ranked their course.
