Research Assistant, Virtual Machine & Web Server Migration
Position overview
Position role: Research Assistant - Flexible Part Time
Rate of pay: $25 - $40 per hour (commensurate with education and experience)
Work Location: Remote
Start Date: The position will start in June 2026
Duration: The position is for up to a maximum of 190 hours, to be completed between June 22, 2026 and October 16, 2026 (or until the work is complete)

The Faculty of Communication, Art, and Technology’s Dean’s Office is looking to hire an undergraduate or graduate student as a Research Assistant to administer virtual machine and web server migration in support of FCAT faculty members’ research. Work will involve setting up virtual machines and web servers and installing key software for several faculty members and research groups. Time requirements are flexible and the Research Assistant can work around their existing schedule. The work will be completed once all of the required virtual machines and web servers are setup.
Requirements:
- Strong experience working in Red Hat Linux environments
- Strong experience installing and setting up MySQL databases, Apache, PHPMyAdmin, and WordPress sites (manually)
- Strong experience setting up Linux environments, user accounts, and user groups
- Experience with DNS and domain name registration
- Highly motivated and able to work remotely under limited supervision
Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in an SFU undergraduate or graduate program.
