Admission requirements
Below are further details on application requirements for SIAT as a high school student, a transfer from another SFU program, or a transfer from another college or university. High school admission requirements
Incoming students are encouraged to have a strong foundation in mathematics, which is necessary for required math and programming courses within the program.
All applicants must meet:
- SFU's English language requirements
- SFU general admission requirements
- SIAT degree-specific requirements

Within-SFU transfer requirements
Transferring to a SIAT Major or Joint Major
Students already admitted to another Simon Fraser University program may apply to transfer into the School of Interactive Arts & Technology (SIAT) major after completing:
- MACM 101 or MATH 130 or equivalent (MATH 150, 151, 154, or 157)
- CMPT 120 or equivalent (CMPT 125, 126, 128, 130, 135 or 166)
- Four IAT courses
The transfer process is competitive. Amount of space available for transfers into SIAT varies from term to term. Students with higher Interactive Arts & Technology grade point averages (IAT GPA) and cumulative grade point averages (CGPA) will be selected first. Students with an IAT GPA or CGPA lower than 2.75 are not normally considered. For reference, below is the average IAT GPA and CGPA for successful transfers from the last three intakes:
- Fall: 3.13
- Spring: 3.13
- Summer: 3.11 IAT GPA, 2.98 CGPA
There is one intake of transfers done per semester. Application deadlines are February 1, June 1 and October 1.
If you meet the above criteria and wish to transfer into a SIAT Major or Joint Major, please complete the SIAT Major or Joint Major online application form.
Transferring to a SIAT Minor
SFU students wishing to transfer into the SIAT Minor are required to have completed 18 units of lower division requirements at the time of application, including three lower division IAT courses chosen from the list below:
- IAT 100 or IAT 110
- IAT 102
- IAT 103W
- IAT 106
- IAT 167
- IAT 201
- IAT 202
- IAT 206W
- IAT 222
- IAT 233
- IAT 235
- IAT 265 or IAT 267
The transfer process is competitive. Amount of space available for transfers into SIAT varies from term to term. External college or university transfer requirements
Students coming from an college or university other than SFU are encouraged to have a strong foundation in mathematics, which is necessary for required math and programming courses within the program.
All transfer applicants coming from a college or university other than SFU must have completed 24 credits of transferrable post-secondary coursework for admission to the university as a transfer student.
