What is Cappuverse SFU?
Cappuverse SFU is SIAT’s official VTuber (Virtual YouTuber) program. Our VTubers highlight the brilliant creations of our students, faculty, and alumni through their regular livestreams and long and short form content. With Cappuverse SFU, we aim to arm our students with in-demand skills such as content creation, motion capture, animation, and game design all the while helping StudioSIAT continue our research and development mission and mature our production pipelines. Featured in the press in CityNews twice, radio interview on CKWX (News 1130), Dexerto, SingTao, and VTuber News Drop

Why does SFU/SIAT have a VTuber program?
VTuber technology fits perfectly into the intersection of the School of Interactive Arts & Technology. It makes full use of the interdisciplinary skills learned in SIAT as well as StudioSIAT’s motion capture technologies and pipeline. Simultaneously, students involved in the creation of the VTubers and the productions of their debuts are given the opportunity for paid work experience and portfolio credits in artistic fields on a very fun and novel project.

How was this made? How was this funded?
Cappuverse SFU is built from the ground up by Canadian university students working with us to gain hands-on experiential learning, funded through CEWIL (Work Integrated Learning) grants. From character design, illustration, graphic and logo design, to 3D models and environments, animation (2D, 3D, and motion graphics), as well as developing a unique mocap pipeline for livestreaming within Unity, students lived the authentic studio production work experience, with leadership and mentorship by StudioSIAT. This was crystallized into a single 6-credit senior level undergraduate course in Fall 2025, IAT 443: Senior Project In Creative Media, to produce the second class of SFU’s VTubers and their debuts in one semester.
