Translink Interactive Zone Map
Interactive map
By: Max Nielsen, Irina Ng, Elizabeth Liao, Mikael Greenwood
Course: IAT 333 Interaction Design Methods
Description: We designed an interactive transit fare map that replaces the existing map on TransLink’s SkyTrain ticket machines (Compass Vending Machines). The goal of the map is to reduce confusion about the SkyTrain's zone-based fare system amongst new and inexperienced riders.
Our map shows the current zone system in effect based on the time of day and which fare riders need to purchase to get to their destination. It interfaces with the Compass Vending Machines (CVMs) to enable interaction when users go to select how many zones they want to travel. Each SkyTrain station has its own custom version of this map based on its location within the SkyTrain network, offering relevant and context specific information.
Using user-centred design practices and research skills, our group (The Interactive Fix-It Force) discovered the goals and pain points of low-frequency transit riders as they make decisions when purchasing their fare at a CVM. In close collaboration with TransLink, we created actionable design concepts that not only achieved our goal but also made the concept more viable for TransLink to implement.
