Am I considered full-time during a co-op work term?

According to the CRA a student enrolled in a co-op term (and taking no classes) is considered neither a full time nor part time student. CRA regulations require SFU to report "0" months on the T2202 tax form when a student is enrolled only in co-op during a term.

I am a student with disabilities enrolled part-time. How do I make a full-time claim?

According to the Canada Revenue Agency, a student may still be considered full-time if they are enrolled in a qualifying education program, attend part-time, and are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit for that year.

I paid a deposit but will not attend until next year. Will I receive a T2202?

No. Deposits are not eligible expenses for T2202 purposes unless you have actually attended classes. If you paid an admission deposit and then declined your offer of admission, you will not receive a T2202.

I made a payment after December 31. Will my T2202 be updated?

Is it necessary to provide my SIN in order to receive a T2202 form?

Starting with the 2019 tax reporting year, all students' Social Insurance Number (SIN) must be included on their T2202 form. Please ensure your SIN is updated in goSFU.

If you need to apply for a SIN, visit the Government of Canada's Apply for a SIN site now.

I am an international student. Why do I need a T2202?

As an international student studying in Canada, you are required to file a Canadian income tax return. The T2202 is an official tax receipt for the tuition fees you have paid. It allows you to claim tuition tax credits, which can reduce the amount of tax you owe if you have earned income in Canada. SFU provides this form to all eligible students so they can complete their Canadian tax returns accurately.

What if I did not earn any income in Canada?

If you did not earn any income in Canada during the calendar year, the T2202 may still be useful. In some cases, you or your parents may be able to use the T2202 for tax purposes in your home country. The rules for this vary by country, so it is recommended to consult an income tax professional or contact International Services for Students for more information.

I am a U.S. student. What is SFU’s IRS number?

SFU's IRS number is 30-0505256.

How do I update my T2202 (e.g., address, SIN)?

First, log in to goSFU and update your SIN or address under the ‘Personal Information’ section. For further details on updating your SIN, refer to the Social Insurance Number.

After updating your information in goSFU, email student_accounts@sfu.ca to request a T2202 amendment. Include your name, student number, specify what information was changed, and indicate the tax year needing the amendment.

Where can I find more information about the T2202?
