LEHMT: Sites of Memory/Lugares de Memória
The Laboratory for the Study of the History of Worlds of Labor (LEHMT) is a multi-disciplinary research and commemoration project hosted by the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, IH-UFRJ), coordinated by Professor Paulo Fontes. LEHMT's online portal is Brazil's largest platform for public history and the sharing of scientifc findings in labour history.
Among the LEHMT's most successful projects has been creating an index of memorial sites dedicated to workers, the working class, trade unions, strikes, and class struggle. More than 130 short articles have been published, many of which were also included in a physical book, Lugares de Memória dos Trabalhadores, edited by Fontes and released last year. The articles are available in English and Portuguese, and many have been authored by collaborators with the ITUHMN.
Besides providing an extensive network of trade union history and commemoration in Portuguese, the LEHMT website also shares articles in English, French, and Spanish as part of a transnational focus that aims to surpass national boundaries of labour history.
Below are links to the most recent articles in this series.
LMT #137: The Zollverein coal mine, Essen, Germany - Stefan Berger
In the second issue of the international season of the series Working-Class Memory Sites on the LEHMT/UFRJ website, we published an article by Stefan Berger, a professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum, about the Zollverein coal mines in Essen, Germany. Since the mid-19th century, Zollverein has been at the heart of the Ruhr Valley's economic production, which, based on mining and steelmaking, was one of the main drivers of German industrialization. In addition, the workers of Zollverein and the Ruhr as a whole were key players in the enormous social and political transformations experienced in that country, with strong international repercussions and connections. The mine was closed down in the 1980s, but it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses the famous Ruhr Museum.

LMT #136: Haymarket Square, Chicago (US) – Leon Fink
On May 1st, the Laboratory for the Study of the History of the Worlds of Labor at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil, launched a new design for its portal lehmt.org. Created six years ago, the website quickly became the main platform for public labor history in Brazil. The portal currently has several sections, podcasts, special videos for You Tube, specific series for public school teachers, among others. As well as specialists in labor studies, it has a significant audience of students, teachers and activists from trade unions and social movements in general. To celebrate the date, we launched an international season of our traditional series “Working class memory sites”. In its debut, Leon Fink, Distinguished Professor in the Department of History at the University of Illinois at Chicago, writes about Haymarket Square. This site in Chicago was the scene of the bloody conflicts during the May 1886 strikes, which gave rise to the May Day celebrations as the international workers' day.
