Romania

Trade unions have a long prominent role in the history of Romanian, begininng in the late 19th-Century where they advocated for labour reform and played a critical part in the formation of the Social Democratic Party. Union pressure over the next several decades helped score the Romanian working class some of their first major wins. While many trade union leaders cooperated with the autocratic Communist regime, since its fall, they have continued to serve a critical role in the social and political life of Romania.
