Solid Space Lab
The SIAT Solid Space fabrication and prototyping lab allows SIAT students and faculty to realize their projects in a tangible way. The lab is located in rooms 3701 and 3702 on podium 3, across from the SFU IT Service Desk. The production technologists office is located nearby. All Solid Space rooms are either card or ke access and use of the lab is by appointment only.
SOLID SPACE PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIST
The Solid Space production technologist manages the lab, safety training, and supports students and faculty in their production needs. Please note: the production technologist is part-time.

What the lab offers
At the SolidSpace Lab, we offer laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC capabilities, as well as other shop resources.
Key digital machines in SRYC 3701 include:
- Two Universal laser cutters: a 48" x 24" (dual laser) machine and a 32" x 18" machine. Lasers can cut certain types of plastics, wood and wood composites, papers, textiles, as well as can mark other materials.
- A 36" x 24" Shopbot Desktop Max CNC for cutting and shaping a variety of materials.
- 3D printers: Big Stratasys F370 commercial 3D printer (uses ABS, TPU, ASA materials) and smaller 3D printers (Ultimakers and a Dremel 3D printer) that print in PLA.
- Shaper Origin (a unique handheld CNC-type portable router).
Our manual fabrication machines, located in SRYC 3702, include:
- Sawstop table saw
- Sawstop router table with Bosch router
- Large euro-style Felder band saw
- Benchtop mill
- Variable speed drill press
- Festool sliding compound Mitre saw and Festool track saw
- A selection of handheld tools, like routers, jigsaws, drills etc.
Please be aware: we do not have planers or jointers, so solid lumber projects can be challenging and may need outside resources.
Due to space and resource limitations, we cannot accommodate spray finishing on campus or most metalworking.
LAB TIMES AND BOOKING
Solid Space is available from 9:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Thursday, by appointment. Please email spacetime@sfu.ca to book a time in the space.
See Safety Training below for more details.
SAFETY TRAINING
Services like 3D printing and laser cutting (we cut or print parts for you) only require that the correctly formatted file be emailed to spacetime@sfu.ca. Fees may be applicable and availability is subject to course priorities.
In-person shop and machine work is reserved for the SIAT community needing course support. Additional requirements to use the lab equipment include:
- Completion of an online Canvas safety course
- An in-person shop safety orientation. Shop saety orientation times are communicated internally, usually via your course Canvas. Custom times can be setup for research groups and individual students. Please email spacetime@sfu.ca for more information.
Please note: there are cut-off dates for safety training every semester. If you miss the window of time that we deliver training in, you will have to wait to take it until the next semester.
LAB FEES
Undergraduate students in IAT 233, IAT 336, and IAT 437 have fees for lab use included at registration. This covers basic material use and limited amounts of 3D printing.
Others may be required to pay fees for use. Please contact the production technologist for details. Payments can either be charged to research accounts or paid in cash or cheque to SIAT office staff on podium 2.
About in-person lab and shop use
All students, including both undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers must have Solid Space staff supervision to work in the lab.
