Enrolment FAQs
How is enrolment priority determined?
Priority is given in the following order:
- Entrance Scholarship recipients
- Open Scholarship recipients
- Varsity student-athletes
- Select students with disabilities and incoming students on formal exchange (released together)
- Incoming first-time students (have never attended any post-secondary institution)
- Remaining first-degree students (includes incoming transfer students), second-degree, post-baccalaureate diploma, and certificate-only students
- Non-degree students
Secondary priority ranking by:
- Projected academic level
- Cumulative GPA
- Units completed
Enrolment appointments are available from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM Pacific Time. The enrolment process is conducted online.
What’s the difference between my enrolment appointment and open enrolment?
Your enrolment appointment is your personal date and time to start registering for classes. Appointments are staggered based on program, year, or enrolment priority.
Open enrolment begins after all appointments have started. During this time, any student can register for classes on a first-come, first-served basis.
When can I enrol in courses?
You will receive an email at your SFU email containing your enrolment appointment, which is the earliest date you can register for classes.
To view your appointment online:
- Sign in to goSFU using your computing ID and password.
- Navigate to the Student Centre.
- If you are a new student, confirm your Admissions Deposit by going to Finances → Account Inquiry.
- Return to the Student Centre.
- Locate your enrolment appointment in the Enrolment Dates box on the right.
Why don’t I have the option to add classes?
You may not be able to enrol in classes if:
- You are signed in to goSFU with your SFU student number. Make sure you are signing in to goSFU with your computing ID.
- You were absent from the University for three or more consecutive terms. You may have to apply for reactivation or readmission to reinstate your student status. See if you are eligible for reactivation or readmission.
- You have a hold on your goSFU account. Check the Holds box on the right side of your Student Center to view details about any holds on your account.
Why can’t I get into a specific class?
You may not be able to get into a specific class if:
- The class is full.
- You do not meet the course prerequisites. Check the prerequisites for your class.
- The class has a time conflict with another class you have enrolled in. Note that midterm dates and times can contribute to the time conflict.
- The class requires departmental consent. Contact the department for more information.
- The class is reserved for students in specific programs. Most of the classes that are reserved will be released for all students during open enrolment; however, some classes may never be released.
- Enrolling in this class would exceed your course load for the term. Check the maximum course load for your faculty.
How do I get into a course if it is reserved but I need to take it?
You will need to speak with the corresponding Departmental Advisor for the course to get permission or wait until the open enrolment period.
