About the Speaker

Rupa Chanda
Professor, Economics and Social Sciences
Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB)
Rupa Chanda is a Professor in Economics and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore (IIMB). She has a Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University, with a specialization in International Trade, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Harvard University.

At IIMB, Dr. Chanda lectures on Macroeconomics and International Trade. She held the institute research chair from 2005 to 2007 and was the recipient of the ICFAI Best Teacher Award for 2006. She is a member of several national expert committees on trade and is also a member of the WHO’s International Roster of Health Experts.

Prior to joining IIMB, Dr. Chanda worked as an Economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, DC. She has held short-term research appointments at the World Bank and the United Nations and has undertaken research assignments for the ILO, WHO, UNDP, UNCTAD, OECD, South Centre, ADB, WTI, IOM, EC, Peterson Institute for International Economics, ICRIER, IIFT and the Government of India. Dr. Chanda’s research interests concern multilateral trade liberalization, the WTO and services, migration, child labour, and macroeconomic stabilization.

Dr. Chanda has numerous publications to her credit, including three books: Services Integration in South Asia: Trade, Investment, and Mobility (Oxford University Press, 2011), India’s Trade in Services: Prospects and Strategies (Wiley Publishers, 2006), and Globalization of Services: India’s Opportunities and Constraints (Oxford University Press, 2002), and over 100 book chapters, journal articles and reports.
