FASS Forward teaches students the skills they need to succeed at school and work
While pursuing their academic path, students need—and have asked for—more skills-based training to prepare them for their careers.
Launching at Simon Fraser University (SFU) this summer, FASS Forward answers those needs. This suite of new micro-credit courses offer students practical, lifelong skills-based training from personal financial planning to public speaking and conflict management.
“The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is offering these micro-courses because we are committed to helping students succeed in school and in life,” said Catherine Murray, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programming, Learning and Teaching, Student Experience. “FASS Forward introduces you to skills that you can build on with other courses at university and in later professional development.”
Although led by FASS, these courses are open to all students at SFU.
These new, one month, one credit courses run at the beginning of the summer semester: May 12 to June 5, 2020, finishing before the workload demands increase for regular summer session courses. FASS Forward courses are also ideal to fill in the gaps for students who need to finish their elective credits.
• Finding voice: Public speaking for social change
• Creating effective teams
• Write right: Strategies for effective revision
• The art of debate: Constructive adversarialism in theory and practice
• Introduction to personal financial planning for students
• Write-minded: Writing with a public audience in mind
• Social media for work and play
• Cultural humility: Understanding diversity, equity and inclusion
• Communicating in conflict and negotiation: An introduction to the essential skills
The course schedule is designed to allow students to take more than one FASS Forward course at a time.
Whether students are finishing an undergraduate degree, planning for grad school or looking for work, FASS Forward introduce the skills needed for the personal and professional development to succeed.
