TRI-Agency & Government Awards

Tri-Agency Research Travel Supplement (CRTAS-RTS)

This award is only available to students who hold Tri-Agency funding at the master's or doctoral level. The value is $9,000 and supports a minimum of two months (59 days) and a maximum of six months (184 days) of research travel.

Supplements are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Tri-Agencies

  • the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR)
  • the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
  • the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)

Candidate Eligibility

  • Students who hold Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) Master’s and Doctoral awards, Vanier CGS, or agency-specific doctoral scholarships (i.e., CIHR Doctoral Foreign Study Award, NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships - Doctoral program and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships program) are eligible to apply.
  • Students who held an MSFSS previously are not eligible to apply.
  • Students must start their research travel:
    • on or after the application deadline date
    • during an active master’s or doctoral award
    • within one year of receiving the notice of award for a CRTAS-RTS

Application Deadlines

June 10: Agencies accept applications up to this date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. 

October 10: Agencies may announce a second intake between August - October if additional funding is available.

How to Apply

  1. Check eligibility and full program description on the CRTAS-RTS webpage before completing the application form. 
  2. Complete the application form, including obtaining current and host supervisor signatures.
  3. Graduate Studies provides the signature for Institutional Approval (Part 6). Email the completed form to gradawards@sfu.ca or bring the form to the Faculty of Graduate Studies Office for signature.  
  4. Submit the completed application form and the signed terms and conditions of applying on the Tri-Agency Secure Submission site. The link is found on the CRTAS-RTS webpage.
