Andrew Petter Graduate Scholarship in Public Policy

 
This scholarship in intended to recognize and provide financial support to graduate students studying public policy.

  1. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and provide financial support to graduate students studying public policy.
  2. The eligibility criteria for this award are:
    1. registration at Simon Fraser University in a graduate degree program with a focus on public policy;
    2. have achieved excellent academic standing at the graduate level or in the most recent degree program completed; and
    3. have demonstrated leadership potential.
  3. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  4. Applications will be made via the online Grad Awards, Application and Adjudication System (GA3) managed by Graduate Studies. Required documents include:
    1. a current, unofficial SFU transcript;
    2. letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with the applicant's work; and
    3. a curriculum vitae summarizing scholastic achievements and work relevant to the aims of this scholarship.

Barbara and James Bennet Graduate Award in Chemistry

 
This award is intended to provide financial support and recognition to an outstanding graduate student in the research area of chemical biology.

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this award is to offer financial assistance and recognition to outstanding graduate students enrolled in the Department of Chemistry.
  2. This award is funded by two-third of the spending allocation from the Barbara and James Bennet Scholars Endowment Fund. Each award, with a maximum value of $4,000 will be awarded annually in the Fall term. Multiple awards may be disbursed if the endowment income permits; however, the value of additional awards must be equal to the first award given in any fiscal year.
  3. The criteria for this award are:
    1. demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate level and if applicable, at the undergraduate level
    2. full-time registration in a master's or doctoral program of study in the Department of Chemistry in the research area of Chemical Biology
  4. During the term in which the award is paid, the recipient must be registered in a thesis course only.
  5. Students who receive continuous scholarship support over a period of at least one year are not eligible for this award. The award cannot be held concurrently with a SFU teaching assistantship. Students who have previously received this award are not eligible to re-apply. This award can be used to top up an internal graduate fellowship.
  6. The award application and/or nomination is made using the Graduate Awards Application System and must include:
    1. a current, unofficial SFU transcript and a copy of the transcript of the most recent degree program completed
    2. one letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with the applicant's work
    3. a concise (no more than one-page) outline of the proposed research

  1. The purpose of this award is to provide financial support for a student in a graduate program in Chemistry, to help with the costs associated in attending an academic conference. Students will be evaluated based on their previous annual progress as determined by the Department of Chemistry’s graduate program committee.
  2. Students must be nominated for this award by the Department of Chemistry’s Graduate Program Committee and should include evidence of the following:
    1. registration and in good academic standing at Simon Fraser University in the graduate program in the Department of Chemistry
    2. demonstrated research excellence at the graduate level
    3. identification of a suitable conference with a high impact for the student’s program

BCAA Environmental Studies in Transportation Award

 
This award is intended to support a graduate student whose thesis research is related to the study of land-based transportation systems and their relationship to, and improvement of, the environment.

  1. The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding academic performance by a graduate student whose thesis research is related to the study of land-based transportation systems and their relationship to, and improvement of, the environment.
  2. The BCAA Environmental Studies in Transportation Award is a one-term award equal to the net income from the endowment fund.
  3. The criteria for this award are:
    1. demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate level
    2. promise of outstanding achievement at the graduate level with particular emphasis on research related to the study of land-based transportation systems and their relationship to, and improvement of, the environment.

Chemistry Alumni Graduate Scholarship

 
This award is intended for a student in a Master's or Doctoral program in the Department of Chemistry who does not currently hold an NSERC Scholarship or other award of equal or greater value than this award.

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this award is to provide financial support for students in a Master’s or Doctoral program in Department of Chemistry who do not currently hold an NSERC grant or other award of equal or greater value than that generated for disbursement by this endowment fund.
  2. Awards will be made annually from a portion of the income earned from the Endowment Fund. A portion of the earned income will be reinvested in the Endowment Fund to protect its value over time. If a suitable candidate is not found in a given year, the income will be reinvested in the Endowment Fund. Initially, awards equal to one term’s tuition fees will be disbursed to one or more candidates. When the endowment fund is sufficient to generate one year’s tuition fees, one such disbursement will be made, with awards of one term’s tuition making up the balance available.
  3. The criteria for this award are:
    1. full-time registration at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program in the Department of Chemistry
    2. Students must be in the second year of their graduate program with a minimum CGPA of 3.70, comprised of courses completed during the first year of their program
  4. This award may not be held in conjunction with other awards of equal or greater value made by Simon Fraser University or other external agencies. Candidates must be nominated for this award by the Department of Chemistry Scholarships Committee with the approval of the Chair, Department of Chemistry. The award application and/or nomination is made using the Graduate Awards Application System and must include:

  1. The purpose of this award is to recognize superior performance in the first year of graduate studies in the Department of Chemistry.
  2. The Chemistry Graduate Research Award is valued at a portion of the annual earned interest from the Endowment.
  3. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  4. The award will be adjudicated by the Department of Chemistry Graduate Studies Committee. Scholastic performance in all areas will be considered. Applicants eligible for this award will have participated in the Department’s Annual Poster and/or Oral Presentation Events, and any similar activities outside the Department (e.g., Local, National, and International Meetings). No award will be made if, in the opinion of the Committee, a suitably high standard has not been reached.

Dr. Michael Lepawsky Graduate Award in Hyperbaric Medicine

 
This award is meant to support a graduate student who is pursuing, or has the intention to pursue research on topics related to hyperbaric medicine.

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this award is to recognize and provide funding to a student enrolled in a graduate degree program in the Faculty of Science who is pursuing research or has the intention to pursue research on topics related to hyperbaric medicine.
  2. One award normally will be offered annually to a graduate student who fulfills the following eligibility criteria:
    1. is registered full-time in a graduate program in the Faculty of Science at SFU
    2. has demonstrated academic achievement in their most recent degree program completed or in their current graduate program
    3. is pursuing, or has the intention to pursue research on topics related to hyperbaric medicine
  3. Students may apply online on the Graduate Awards System. The following documents must accompany the online application: 
    1. a current, unofficial SFU transcript and/or a copy of the transcript of the most recent degree program completed
    2. one letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with the applicant's work
    3. a one page research proposal demonstrating research in progress, or the intention to pursue research on topics that include hyperbaric medicine

  1. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and provide financial support to one or more graduate students in any Faculty who are pursuing a graduate degree at Simon Fraser University.
  2. One scholarship will be granted annually, in any term, to a student who fulfills the following criteria:
    1. is registered at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program in any faculty;
    2. has demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate or undergraduate level;
    3. shows promise of originality and creativity in research; and
    4. has contributed to the advancement of Persian culture and the Iranian community through volunteerism or research in Canada or in the applicant's country of origin.
  3. Preference will be given to an entering student.
  4. This scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarships made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  5. Applications will be adjudicated via the Graduate Awards, Application and Adjudication System  (GA3) managed by Graduate Studies, and must be accompanied by:
    1. a current, unofficial transcript or a copy of the official transcript of the most recent degree program completed;
    2. one letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with the applicant's work;
    3. a current curriculum vitae; and
    4. a one-page statement outlining the applicant's contributions to the advancement of Persian culture and the Iranian community through volunteerism or research.

Graduate Fellowships

 
This award is intended for graduate students in full time research based programs. This award can only be held within the first nine (9) terms of a Master's program or the first fifteen (15) terms of a PhD program. *Currently, we are waiving the number of terms that student can apply and/or hold the GF as long as their research has been impacted by COVID-19. This special arrangement is applicable for 3 terms: Spring 2021, Summer 2021, and Fall 2021. Student also needs to be approved by the Graduate Program Chair within their program before receiving the award.* Applicants are only eligible to receive up to a maximum of two full GFs, or four half GFs, during an academic year.

Terms of Reference

  1. To be eligible to hold a Graduate Fellowship (GF), a student must be registered as a full-time, regular (not "on-leave") student in a Master’s or Doctoral program.  In programs where fees are assessed on a per-credit basis, students must be taking at least six credit hours to be eligible to receive a Graduate Fellowship. *Currently, we are waiving the number of terms that student can apply and/or hold the GF as long as their research has been impacted by COVID-19. This special arrangement is applicable for 3 terms: Spring 2021, Summer 2021, and Fall 2021. Student also needs to be approved by the Graduate Program Chair within their program before receiving the award.*
  2. Eligible students must have a minimum first-class (3.50) cumulative grade point average. In exceptional cases, other evidence of outstanding ability may outweigh this criterion. Since academic merit is the primary criterion for ranking eligible applicants, departments must notify all applicants in advance if additional criteria will be used.
  3. Students will be eligible to hold a GF only during the first 9 semesters of a Master's program and during the first 15 semesters of a Ph.D. program.
  4. Students who did not complete a Master's program before transferring into a PhD are eligible to hold the GF within the first 15 semesters of their PhD, from the PhD start date
  5. GFs will be awarded in increments of .5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0. A partial GF (.5) is valued at $3,500; a full GF (1.0) is valued at $7,000. Applicants may be eligible to receive up to a maximum of two full GFs, or four partial GFs, during the academic year (September 1 – August 31).
  6. GF recipients are eligible to hold other scholarships funded from SFU sources.
  7. Graduate Fellowship recipients may accept other scholarship support from external funding sources including SFU’s ‘private’ awards (derived from annual and endowed funds). Recipients should be aware that some external awards may restrict students from holding a GF at the same time as the external award. Effective Fall 2021, if the total of the GF and other external support exceeds $60,000 per annum, the value of the GF will be reduced so that the total equals $60,000.
  8. There is no restriction on GF recipients receiving income for work performed during tenure of the GF.
  9. Application is made through the Graduate Award Application System.
  10. Awards are made by the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee on the recommendations of the Departmental Graduate Program Committee.

Hargreaves Scholarship in Science and Applied Sciences

This award is intended for a student pursuing a graduate degree in Science or Applied Sciences whose research will contribute to growth companies in the British Columbia technology sector. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

  1. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for a student pursuing a graduate degree in Science or Applied Sciences whose research will contribute to the technology sector in British Columbia.
  2. One scholarship, valued at a minimum of $1,500, will be awarded annually to a student who fulfills the following criteria:
    1. demonstrated academic excellence at the undergraduate level and, if applicable, at the graduate level;
    2. full-time registration at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program in the Faculty of Applied Sciences or the Faculty of Science;
    3. promise of outstanding achievement at the graduate level with particular emphasis on intellectual ability, originality and ability in research;
    4. is undertaking research that will address issues of importance to growth companies in the British Columbia technology sector; and
    5. is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  3. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards made by SFU or other agencies, where permitted by those agencies.
  4. Multiple scholarships may be distributed if undisbursed funds have been carried forward from a prior year or term.
  5. The award application is made using the Graduate Awards Application System and must include:
    1. a current, unofficial SFU transcript;
    2. a concise description (one page) of the student's research program including a description of the research implications for a British Columbia technology firm or the BC technology sector in general; and
    3. a letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with the applicant's academic achievements and experience.
  6. The completed application and all supporting documentation must be received by the Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences. 
  7. The scholarship will be granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee.

John D'Auria Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Chemistry and Physics

 
The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and provide financial support to one or more graduate students in the Department of Chemistry or the Department of Physics at Simon Fraser University.

The endowment supporting the John D' Auria Memorial Graduate Scholarship was established at Simon Fraser University in 2020 with a generous gift from friends, family and colleagues of John D' Auria.

Dr. John M. D'Auria, Professor Emeritus, Simon Fraser University, was born March 28, 1939 in New York. After completing an undergraduate degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), a PhD in Nuclear Science at Yale University, and Postdoctoral research at Columbia University, he was appointed in 1967 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science at newly established Simon Fraser University (SFU). John participated in the early planning of TRIUMF (Canada's particle accelerator centre), which was founded in 1968, and was pivotal in the creation of SFU's affiliated nuclear-science program.

During his sabbatical at CERN's (European Organization for Nuclear Research) Isotope Mass Separator On-Line facility (ISOLDE) in 1975-1976, he was the first author of the paper reporting the discovery of 74Rb, and he became very interested in the facility's isotope-separation technology. This led John to lead a group with modest funding and much resourcefulness to build the TISOL (Test Isotope Separator On-Line) facility at TRIUMF. ISOLDE and TISOL researchers collaborated fruitfully, including an episode where TRIUMF imported, diagnosed and repaired a failed ISOLDE front-end. Notable TISOL successes included estimates of the production of oxygen-16 in the helium burning of dying Red Giant stars (of prime importance in astrophysics), as well as launching the TRI NAT (TRIUMF Neutral Ion Trap) experimental facility, which is still active today.

The purpose is to provide support for international graduate students with unforeseen or unmet expenses and may also support programs and initiatives designed to enhance the educational experience for international graduate students.

  1. The purpose is to provide support for international graduate students with unforeseen or unmet expenses and may also support programs and initiatives designed to enhance the educational experience for international graduate students. Expenditure amount and type will be at the discretion of the Dean and Associate Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies or their designate.
  2. Eligible student expenses may include but are not limited to:
    - funding for personal expenses such as food and rent;
    - travel expenses for family emergencies;
    - travel expenses for education purposes such as conferences; and
    - registration fees for conferences and workshops.
  3. To be eligible for this award, students must:
    1. be designated as international students; and
    2. be enrolled either full-time or part-time in a graduate program at SFU.
  4. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  5. The application will be made using the Graduate Awards Application System and must be accompanied by:

  2. One award normally will be offered annually to a graduate student who fulfills the following eligibility criteria:

  2. The Michael Geller Graduate Scholarship is a one-term award valued at a portion of the earned income from the endowment.
  3. The criteria for this award are:
    1. full-time registration at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program
    2. demonstrated academic and research excellence at the post-graduate level with particular emphasis on intellectual ability, originality and ability in research
  4. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.

  2. The Michael Stevenson Graduate Scholarship is a three-term award and it is tenable during three consecutive academic terms in Fall, Spring, and Summer.

  1. The purpose of the award is to recognize and provide funding to graduate students conducting community-engaged research that informs policy and/ or influences marine or environmental conservation.
  2. One or more awards will be granted annually in the fall term to either a Master's or Doctoral. If more than one award is granted, the preference is to grant equal numbers of awards to Master's and Doctoral students.
  3. The award(s) will be offered to graduate students who fulfill the following eligibility criteria: a. full-time registration at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program in the Faculty of Environment or the Faculty of Science;
    1. demonstrated academic achievement in the most recent degree completed or in their current graduate program;
    2. promise of outstanding achievement at the graduate level with particular emphasis on intellectual ability, originality and ability in community engaged research that inform positive change and/ or policy in marine or environmental conservation; and
    3. focus on community-engaged research that informs policy and/ or influences marine or environmental conservation.
  4. Preference will be given to students in the Faculty of Environment.
  5. The application must be made via the Graduate Award, Application and Adjudication System (GA3). Required documents include:
    1. a current, unofficial SFU transcript and/ or a copy of the transcript of the most recent degree program completed;

President's PhD Scholarship

 
This award PhD students who have made excellent progress in their degree, and who have demonstrated academic excellence, substantial scholarly output and leadership early in their PhD program relative to their peers. Note that not all departments use this award.

Terms of Reference

  1. A limited number of President’s PhD Scholarships are available annually and the award is currently valued at $7,000.
  2. To be eligible to hold a PS, the applicant must have completed fewer than 12 terms of enrolment in the program and be registered as a full-time, regular (not “on-leave” or “part-time”) student in good standing in the PhD program at Simon Fraser University.
  3. At the time of nomination, eligible students must have completed all departmental and University requirements for the degree (eg. courses, comprehensive or qualifying examinations), except the thesis and, in the case of students in the Clinical Psychology Program, the internship. Evaluation criteria includes: the extent to which PhD students have made excellent progress in their degrees, and have demonstrated academic excellence, substantial scholarly output and leadership early in their PhD programs relative to their peers.
  4. While there is no restriction on PS recipients receiving income for work performed during their tenure of the PS, given the intent of the award, recipients are expected to limit the number of hours worked weekly and restrict positions to those that are keeping with the spirit of the award.
  5. Recipients should be aware that some external awards may restrict students from holding a PS at the same time as the external award. Students holding a national award from SSHRC, CIHR, NSERC or their equivalent (ie. SFU Entrance Scholarship or a major international award) are ineligible to hold the PS award during the period that they are holding the other award.
  6. A PhD student must be nominated for the PS by the student’s senior supervisor whose nomination letter should address the evaluation criteria. Eligible students may not receive more than one PS during their doctoral program or have previously received a President’s Research Stipend award.
  7. The award application or nomination is made using the Graduate Awards Application System and is submitted to the department of enrolment by the deadline date. The application must be accompanied by a nomination letter from the senior supervisor.
  8. Awards are made on the recommendations of the academic unit’s Graduate Program Committee to the Dean of Graduate Studies.
  9. All awards are subject to SFU’s general graduate funding policies.

Quirks & Quarks Graduate Award for Best PhD Thesis

  1. The purpose of this award is to recognize the best PhD Thesis by a convocating doctoral student.
  2. The criteria for this award are:
    1. successfully defended the thesis and completed all degree requirements within the twelve month period ending March 31st in a doctoral program in the Faculty of Science at SFU
    2. demonstrated academic and research excellence
  3. The student must be nominated for this award by the Faculty of Science Graduate Studies Committee (FSGSC) from a nomination package received from each department within the Faculty, consisting of the following:
    1. nomination letter from the Department Chair explaining the significance, impact and originality of the doctoral research and identifying the contribution made by the student as distinct from that by the supervisor of the research
    2. a one-page summary of the research written in plain language and signed by the student
    3. an up-to-date curriculum vitae that clearly indicates the student’s contributions to publications and collaborative research activities
    4. a copy of the external examiner’s pre-defense report on the thesis
    5. a current, unofficial SFU transcript
  4. Applications will be accepted on the new online graduate award system (GA3).
  5. The Faculty of Science Graduate Studies Committee will select one candidate from the nominations received and forward this to the Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Terms of Reference

  1. The William and Ada Isabelle Steel Memorial Graduate Scholarship is valued at approximately $17,000 per annum of which $15,000 is the scholarship portion and $2,000 is available for travel, accommodation, and related research expenses. One scholarship is awarded per year.
  2. To be eligible to apply, a student must:
    1. be enrolled in a graduate program at Simon Fraser University
    2. be engaged in, or planning to engage in, research which requires work outside the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.
  3. The criteria for this award are:
    1. demonstrated academic excellence at the undergraduate level and, if applicable, at the graduate level
    2. evidence of outstanding achievement at the graduate level, with particular emphasis on intellectual ability, originality and ability in research
  4. This award is paid over three consecutive terms starting in the Fall term.
  5. During tenure of the award, the recipient must be registered full-time in a graduate program at Simon Fraser University. In programs where fees are assessed on a per-credit basis, students must be taking at least six credits to be eligible to hold the award. If a recipient wishes to register "on-leave" or "part-time" for one term, a deferment of the scholarship should be requested by writing to the Dean of Graduate Studies. Permission will be granted in exceptional circumstances only.
  6. The Steel Scholarship recipient may accept other scholarship support from external sources and/or from awards administered by SFU. Effective Fall 2021, if the total of the Steel Scholarship and the other support exceeds $60,000 per annum, the value of the Steel Scholarship will be reduced so that the total equals $60,000. 
  7. The Steel Memorial Graduate Scholarship is intended to provide students with a period of time that they can devote largely to graduate studies and research. Departments may build this principle into their criteria for awarding this scholarship. There is no restriction on Steel Scholarship recipients receiving income for other work during the tenure of the scholarship, except as noted in Point 6. Recipients should be aware that some external awards may restrict students from holding a scholarship at the same time as the external award.
  8. The award is made by the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee after a University-wide competition in which departmental recommendations are considered.
  9. The award application or nomination is made using the Graduate Awards Application System and must include:
    1.  SFU transcript
    2. Autobiographical sketch and statement of research interests and goals
    3. List of scholarly publications
    4. List of other scholarship or financial support held or applied for.
