doctoral student in the Faculty of Education

I am a Ph.D. candidate doing research on LGBTQ+ immigrants' English learning experiences in non-conventional educational settings in the Metro Vancouver Area. My training is in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, queer theory, and migration studies. My dissertation projects focus on revealing how dominant ideologies of race, sexuality, and language impact racialized queer learners' access to language learning and exploring how they exert agency to refashion their relationship with the world to regain access.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?

The program that I am currently enrolled in enables me to do my research.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

I may tell my family that it is an interesting program that helped me develop new world views and better understand who I am.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?

I enjoyed the community we have built within our program and the support from different parties that I have received.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships; Lis Welch Grad Scholarship in Education; Community Education Impact GA; Graduate Fellowship; Special Grad Entrance Scholarship
