Official transcripts

An official transcript is a complete record of your academic history at SFU up until the day the transcript is produced. It lists classes in progress, courses you have taken, grades received, credentials awarded and other information relating to your undergraduate and graduate academic career at SFU. Course work taken at other institutions that is being credited towards your program at SFU will not appear on your official transcript, but it will list the name of the institution at which transfer credit was taken as well as the total number of transfer credit received. We suggest you review your unofficial transcript prior to placing an order for your official transcript. If your grade has not been posted for a course on your unofficial transcript, it will not be posted for your official transcript. Credential conferral will only be documented on your transcript after you receive your Senate letter. See instructions here on how to see your unofficial transcript.

All official transcripts are printed on security paper with the SFU seal and signature of the Registrar. Official transcripts are available to current students, former students and alumni. All outstanding accounts must be cleared before an official transcript is released.

Note:

All academic transcripts are confidential and can only be released by request from a student or alumnus. To ensure security and privacy, we do not accept transcript requests by phone.

NOTE:
To request a record of your non-credit Continuing Studies academic history,  contact SFU Continuing Studies.

Designating a third party to pick up your transcript(s)

If you are writing a letter of authorization, it must include the following information:

  • Your full name
  • Student number
  • Name of authorized action (e.g. “I hereby authorize Simonetta Fraser to pick up my transcript on my behalf.”)
  • Written signature
  • Attached photocopies of two pieces of SFU or government-issued ID (e.g. SFU student card, driver’s license, BC Services Card, passport)

The third party must provide valid SFU or government-issued photo identification and the letter of written authorization, if applicable, at the time of pick-up.

Tracking your order

If you chose to have your transcript sent by courier, you can track your order by the following methods:

  • Your tracking number will be emailed to you using the email address listed in your Official Transcript Application.
  • Depending on the courier service listed in that email, visit www.canadapost.ca or www.dhl.com and refer to your tracking number to monitor your document’s progress.

Important information

  • Do NOT email your credit card information.
  • All transcript orders are non-refundable.
  • Transcripts can only be ordered by a student or alumnus even if a third party is authorized to pick it up.
  • Transcripts will not be issued to a student or alumnus with an outstanding balance on their student account. Please contact Student Accounts or email student_accounts@sfu.ca about paying late overdue fees.
  • Transcripts will not be printed until payment is received in full.

  • Online orders cannot be changed or cancelled once paid through your Student Center on goSFU.
  • Unclaimed transcripts ordered for pickup will be destroyed 4 months after being issued.
  • Transcripts sent to incomplete addresses provided on the application may cause delivery delays or returns by Canada Post. Non-receipt of transcript due to incomplete address will require a new order and payment.

  • Lost or stolen transcripts are not replaceable. Simon Fraser University is not responsible for the loss or delay of transcripts in the mail.

Transcript key

Official transcripts have a transcript key or legend which outlines undergraduate grading systems and graduate grading systems. The transcript key on official transcripts was updated in 2024. The section below outlines historical information, which was previously noted on official transcript keys.

Grading Systems

For more information about the university’s grading system, refer to the Grading Systems and Policies section of the University Calendar

  • Prior to Fall 1970, the A grade was defined as ‘First class’, the B grade was defined as ‘Second class’, the P grade was defined as ‘Pass’, and the F grade was defined as “Fail’ in the graduate grading system.
  • Effective Fall 1970, the numerical value was added to the graduate grading system.
  • Effective Fall 1986, the A-, B+, and B- grades were added to the graduate grading system.
  • Effective Fall 1986, the P grade was replaced with a C grade in the graduate grading system.
  • Effective Fall 1991, the definition of the grade C- was changed to ‘Marginal performance’ in the undergraduate grading system.
  • Effective Fall 2002, the A+ and C+ grades were added to the graduate grading system.
  • Effective Summer 2009, the FD grade was added to the undergraduate and graduate grading system.
  • Effective Spring 2021, a pilot Elective Grade System including the P, CR, NC grades was created.

Grade Point Averages

  • Undergraduate Grading System: The CGPA calculated for terms completed prior to the Fall 1979 includes repeated courses.
  • Graduate Grading System: Effective April 1986, the CGPA is the cumulative average of the grade points earned in the SFU graduate courses taken toward a master’s or doctoral degree, or graduate diploma or certificate.
  • Prior to Fall 2023, units earned in FAL X99 & FAN X99 are additive, and do not count towards the total units required for a degree. The grades received in FAL X99 & FAN X99 are included in the calculation of the cumulative grade point average.
  • Effective Fall 2023, units earned in FAL X99 & FAN X99 are integral and count towards the total units required for a degree. The grade received in FAN X99 is included in the calculation of the cumulative grade point average. FAL X99 is graded on a pass/fail basis using SFU’s competency-based grading system.
