The GE Typhoon IP phosphorimager is a specialized laser scanner that detects, documents, and quantifies radiolabelled proteins (as little as 3 pg) and nucleic acids. A phosphor storage screen is exposed to a radioactive sample, such as a gel or blot, and captures the energy from the emitted radiation. The screen is then imaged by the scanner which exposes the screen to additional light, releasing the captured energy as light in proportion to the amount of radioactivity in the sample. Radioisotopes detected include 3H, 14C, 32P, 35S, among others. Please note that this Typhoon is a phosphorimager only; it does not do fluorescent scans.
