Previous Peer Mentor
Aneesa Hashimi
When I was in my first year, my mentor played such an important role in helping me feel welcome, meet new people, and overall guiding me through my first year at SFU. I became a mentor because I want to support other students just as my mentor supported me and help make their transition to SFU and the Faculty of Education more enjoyable!
What is your best first year memory?
I'd say my best first-year memory was attending EDventure Day. The activities and games planned were so much fun and I loved the positive environment and opportunity to meet new people. I was able to connect with other education students and make some wonderful friends! It was a very enjoyable and memorable experience!
Words of advice to new students?
Explore the various opportunities that SFU has to offer and get involved in the community! It can be daunting to put yourself out there at first, especially as a new student, but I can say with certainty that it will be 100% worth it! Personally, getting involved with different clubs and groups at SFU has provided me with some of my most valuable and memorable experiences. In particular, I really encourage students to get involved with the Education Student Association, whether it be through attending events or joining as a member – it's a great way to build connections, make friends, and just have some fun!
What are you involved in on and off campus?
I am currently the Marketing and Communications Director of the Education Student Association. I am also involved with Embark Sustainability and have previously volunteered virtually with Racing Readers, an after-school program that supports students' well-being and development of education skills. Apart from my involvement at SFU, I usually volunteer and work with the Boys and Girls Club of Southcoast BC and Community Schools Partnership to facilitate camps and after-school programs in my local community.
