Mathematics Education

Mathematics education is an integral part of the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University. The main objective of mathematics education is to develop educators with an understanding of mathematics and its teaching and learning, and with the capabilities for research and professional practice in the field.

The Mathematics Education MEd program is a course work only degree culminating in a portfolio/ interview examination. All students enter graduate work in Arts Education through the MEd route.

  • Explore innovations in mathematics education, examine multiple perspectives on teaching and learning of mathematics, and enhance their own teaching of mathematics, while learning the latest research and innovations in mathematics education. Through guided methodologies students will be scaffolded in the implementation of this research and innovations into their practice.

  • Deepen your knowledge of how your students learn mathematics and help them engage with and succeed in the subject. This program is an opportunity to explore curriculum changes at your school to benefit your students, while also upgrading your own qualifications.

  • Our doctoral students in this program come from a variety of academic backgrounds. They also focus on an array of mathematics education contexts including primary, secondary, or college-level teaching and learning, as well as teacher preparation.

  • My time in the mathematics education program at SFU has been life-changing for me as a teacher."

  • "Curiosity and a love of learning, combined with a desire to better understand the teaching and learning process, are what compel me to keep learning."

"As a high school Mathematics teacher, I enjoy all the experiences of a dynamic classroom and always look for ways to enhance my practice. This program is the best professional development you will experience!"
