Dr. Roumi Ilieva's scholarship is in the fields of applied linguistics and second/additional language education. Her research has focused on language and culture, the internationalization of education, migration and integration, teacher identities.

Her work has consistently involved the employment of critical perspectives supplemented where appropriate with complementary theoretical approaches to account for complexities in experiencing languages, cultures, and identities in various educational settings by immigrant, minority, and international students and teachers.

Dr. Ilieva is interested in sociocultural (especially Bakhtinian), critical, poststructural, psychoanalytical, and ecological perspectives on curriculum, pedagogy, and learning.
