Educational Technology and Learning Design
Educational Technology and Learning Design (ETLD) explores how digital technologies are designed, implemented and studied in ways that support ethical and equitable learning and human flourishing.
Research in ETLD is conducted both within and beyond traditional educational settings. Faculty in this area engage in technology development as well as critical inquiry into the possibilities and limitations of technology-supported educational practices, including how they may sometimes reproduce or perpetuate educational problems and inequities. Faculty members do research that examines how digital technologies can address educational needs and support more equitable and effective educational practices.
As an ETLD doctoral student, you could explore how digital technologies are designed, implemented, experienced and evaluated in practically any formal or informal educational context. This research focus area is intellectually eclectic, interdisciplinary, and receptive to a wide range of influences. Doctoral students draw on a wide range of theoretical and methodological perspectives in the learning sciences, including cognitive psychology and cultural-historical activity theory.
