International Teacher Education Module (ITEM)
The ITEM program examines issues and challenges faced by students and teachers in B.C. schools where diversity, global education, English-as-an-additional-language and intercultural communication have become critical and integral components of the curriculum and classroom life.
Focusing on the "internationalization" of education, ITEM offers student teachers an intensive experience of living in unique communities abroad to develop global perspectives and intercultural competencies.
First introduced in 1996 with partners in Mexico, ITEM has since given student teachers the opportunity to explore life and education in countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, China, and India.
We will be offering a locally-based ITEM module in the Spring 2024 term. During the EDUC 400 Fall 2023 term, student teachers can choose ITEM as a module.
This unique module is for student teachers interested in international education, intercultural communication, English-as-an-additional-language – and an exciting experience abroad – which will allow them to develop unique perspectives informing their teaching practice (whether locally or globally).
Designed For
Student teachers interested in examining issues and challenges faced by students and teachers in B.C. schools where diversity, global education, English-as-an-additional-language and intercultural communication have become critical and integral components of the curriculum and classroom life.
Message regarding ITEM Fall 2023 travel:
Thank you for your interest in our International Teacher Education Module (ITEM). After much deliberation with the ITEM team, we have made the difficult decision to cancel ITEM travel for Fall 2023 until further notice. Without the travel segment, we will continue to have an international education-themed module in the Spring 2024 term and provide student teachers with focused insights into education through a global lens. There will be no added cost for this module.
Continue to check this website for more information on the ITEM experience. If you have any questions, contact Sarine Sadhra, the Program Coordinator supporting the ITEM module, at ssadhra@sfu.ca
