SSHRC'S CGS & Doctoral Awards

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) runs the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program Doctoral Scholarships (CGSD) and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships award under their Talent Program.

Canadian Graduate Scholarships

Deadline to Apply:
October 1, 2020

CGSD Award Value:
$35,000 per year for up to three year

SSHRC DF Award Value:
20,000 per year for up to four years

Candidate Eligibility:

  • Canadian citizens
  • permanent residents of Canada

International students are not eligible to apply

Successful holders of this award may be eligible to be nominated for the SSHRC Talent Award. Learn more →

Undertaking SSHRC research? Consider applying to the annual SSHRC Storyteller's competition, where you may receive $3,000, attend the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and possibly present at the SSHRC Impact Awards. Learn more →

Students apply in one competition - the CGSD will be offered to the top-ranked applicants and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered a SSHRC DF.

How to Apply

Confirm that you meet all the criteria below before you apply for a CGSD and SSHRC DF.

Review evaluation criteria

Applications are adjudicated, and available funds awarded, through a merit review process
Applications (whether sent directly to SSHRC or via the institutions) are evaluated by multidisciplinary selection committees covering broad research areas.

November 9-10
University Scholarship Selection Committee (USSC) deadline to make final decisions
November 12-17 Students who have been selected to go forward can update their applications
November 20 FINAL submission deadline
