SSHRC'S CGS & Doctoral Awards

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) runs the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program Doctoral Scholarships (CGSD) and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships award.

Deadline to Apply:
Extended to: October 12, 2023 (4:30 pm) due to SSHRC's technical difficulties

CGSD Award Value:
$35,000 per year for up to three years

SSHRC DF Award Value:
$20,000 per year for up to four years

Candidate Eligibility:
  • Canadian citizens
  • Permanent residents of Canada

International students are not eligible to apply.

Successful holders of this award may be eligible to be nominated for the SSHRC Talent Award.

Undertaking SSHRC research? Consider applying to the annual SSHRC Storyteller's competition, where you may receive $3,000, attend the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and possibly present at the SSHRC Impact Awards.

Students apply in one competition - the CGSD will be offered to the top-ranked applicants and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered a SSHRC DF.

Confirm that you meet all the criteria below before you apply for a CGSD and SSHRC DF.

Review evaluation criteria

Applications are adjudicated, and available funds awarded, through a merit review process
Applications (whether sent directly to SSHRC or via the institutions) are evaluated by multidisciplinary selection committees covering broad research areas.

Competition Timeline (2023)

October 12
4:30 PM
Student deadline to submit the full application on SSHRC’s Online Portal. If the deadline falls on a weekend or on a federal statutory holiday, applications must be submitted before 4:30 p.m. (PST) the following business day.
November 8-9
University Scholarship Selection Committee (USSC) deadline to make final decisions
November 10-16 Students who have been selected to go forward can update their applications
November 21 FINAL SFU submission deadline
