Tell us a little about yourself, including what inspires you to learn and continue in your chosen field
Environmental toxicology is a relatively new topic for me as I come from a human health science background. I am motivated to combine the two fields of knowledge when graduating.
Why did you choose to come to SFU?
The REM program is course based with the option of a project or thesis which I found the best of both worlds. The classes offered are also very diverse which I think adds to the learning experience!
How would you describe your research or your program to a family member?
I am performing a risk assessment of contaminated sites in addition to testing a bioaccumulation model for a group of chemicals called PFAS.
What three (3) keywords would you use to describe your research?
toxicology, bioaccumulation, risk assessment
How have your courses, RA-ships, TA-ships, or non-academic school experiences contributed to your academic and/or professional development?
I worked in sports management and health research prior to starting my master's program. I believe that the leadership and data analysis skills I gained help me in my everyday work at SFU.
Have you been the recipient of any major or donor-funded awards? If so, please tell us which ones and a little about how the awards have impacted your studies and/or research
I am grateful to have been awarded NSERC CGS M, BC CSAP and the Dean's Graduate Scholarship which allow me to focus on my studies while attending Grad school.
What are some tips for balancing your academic and personal life?
I find that purposefully scheduling other activities help take my mind off of the stress of school. Joining a sports team is a great way to get physical exercise and meet some new friends!
