doctoral student in the Faculty of Health Sciences

I am a registered outreach social worker who works on stolen xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, sḵwx̱wú7mesh & səlilwətaɬ lands (aka vancouver's dtes). I am currently in the doctoral program in the Faculty of Health Sciences.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?

Mostly due to my supervisor's work and willingness to support me in better understanding research methods/tools. Remaining in close proximity to the communities where I spend time & work was an important factor in deciding to return to a university setting.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

Expanding police accountability with a vision for a world free of state violence.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?

I have a complex relationship to institutions and spaces like universities. I have enjoyed and been fortunate to connect with people who are likewise interested in challenging power and reducing the harms that have typically been linked to research and research funding.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.

The Tri-Council CGS-D - without being awarded these funds, I would not have been able to afford to come return to university. I believe grad programs need to be better funded so that they are more accessible across socioeconomic status.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE?

Support your local land back, abolitionist, drug user, sex worker safety & harm reduction groups in ways that you can!
