Nurturing Knowledge: Edmonds Community School Celebrates Generous Donation from Education Class of 2023

July 19, 2023

On June 28, 2023, the Faculty of Education made a heartwarming visit to Edmonds Community School in Burnaby, where they presented a collection of books to enrich the school library. This generous donation was awarded to the school as part of the inaugural Legacy Gift, thoughtfully chosen by the Class of 2023.

The graduates had a unique opportunity to select a cause they felt passionate about, and after careful consideration, they unanimously voted for "Books for a School Library" as their top priority. Edmonds Community School was the recipient of their thoughtful choice.

Nestled in the vibrant Burnaby neighborhood, Edmonds Community School stands as a shining exemplar of inclusivity, care, and academic excellence within one of the most diverse communities in the province. The institution's unwavering belief in the extraordinary potential of its students is evident in every aspect of its educational approach, fostering a welcoming environment where over 60 languages are spoken. As newcomers embark on their journey in Canada, Edmonds warmly embraces them, making it a beacon of opportunity and growth in the heart of diversity.

The donation included a range of captivating non-fiction and fiction titles, including works from Indigenous authors, such as, "Phyllis's Orange Shirt", "Love without Bounds: An Intersection Allies Book about Families", "The Princess in Black and the Prince in Pink", "Tales of a Seventh-Grade Lizard Boy, Soccer Shake Up", and "The Last Two Crayons."

The Faculty of Education's Legacy Initiative is committed to making a positive impact in education, and their visit to Edmonds Community School is a testament to their dedication. We would also like to acknowledge the support of SFU Alumni in this initiative. To explore more inspiring stories and learn about this initiative, visit the Convocation Virtual Space.
