Mitacs builds partnerships between academia, industry, and the world – to create a more innovative Canada. Mitacs programs are open to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in any academic discipline. International students are welcome.

Mitacs Programs

Mitacs Accelerate

Mitacs Accelerate supports collaborative research between universities and non-academic partners, including industry and eligible not-for-profit organizations. The program is open to Canadian and international graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in all academic disciplines. 

  • For Master's, PhD & Postdoctoral Fellows
  • Funding starts at $15,000 per four month internship, including a minimum $10,000 intern stipend/salary
  • Proposal are accepted anytime 
  • Applications are non competitive

Before applying: 

  • Browse the Mitacs projects database and Accelerate projects seeking interns 
  • Speak to your supervisor about the internship opportunity 
  • Indentify a non-academic partner who can contribute $7,500 per internship (matched by Mitacs). *for profit corporations and select not for profit organizations in Canada are eligible 
  • Confirm that you can spend 50 percent of the internship on site with the partner 
  • Contact: Allison Brennan (mitacsbd@sfu.ca) to confirm the eligibility of your non-academic partner and discuss your application

How to apply:

  • Write your proposal with your academic supervisor and partner organization. We recommend starting your proposal three months before the desired internship start date.
  • Get feedback on your proposal from Allison Brennan at mitacsbd@sfu.ca
  • Collect all required signatures via the SFU Signature Sheet
    • List your faculty supervisor as the Principal Investigator. The fellow should subsequently be listed in parentheses, e.g., "Principal Investigator: Supervisor Name (fellow: Fellow Name)."
    • Signature Sheets are signed by the supervisor, then their Chair/Director, and Dean. Once these signatures are secured, the Signature Sheet will be sent to ORS for final approval.
  • Email your proposal package to Allison Brennan at mitacsbd@sfu.ca for submission.

Mitacs Elevate

Mitacs Elevate is a postdoctoral fellowship with a customized research management training program, along with a two year research project with a non-academic organization. The program is open to Canadian and international postdoctoral fellows in all academic disciplines. 

  •  Elevate awards are $55,000 per year for two years, including a minimum $50,000 fellow stipend/salary and the professional development curriculum 
  • Applications are accepted through a competitive call for proposals two-three times per year. For current deadlines see Mitacs Elevate 
  • Contact Allison Brennan at mitacsbd@sfu.ca for information on applying outside of an open application call

Before applying: 

  • Browse the Mitacs projects database
  • Identify a faculty supervisor
  • Identify a non-academic partner who can contribute $35,000 per year. *For-profit corporations and select not-for-profit organizations in BC are eligible
  • Confirm that you can spend 50 percent of the fellowship on site with the partner
  • Contact Allison Brennan at mitacsbd@sfu.ca to confirm the eligibility of your non-academic partner and discuss your application

  • Submit an Intent to Apply by the posted deadline
  • Collect all required signatures via the SFU Signature Sheet
    • List your faculty supervisor as the Principal Investigator. The fellow should subsequently be listed in parentheses, e.g., "Principal Investigator: Supervisor Name (fellow: Fellow Name)."
    • Signature Sheets are signed by the supervisor, then their Chair/Director, and Dean. Once these signatures are secured, the Signature Sheet will be sent to ORS for final approval.
  • Submit your completed proposal package via the Mitacs website instructions or Allison Brennan at mitacsbd@sfu.ca

Mitacs Globalink

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award provides travel funding for senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral fellows in any field. This $6,000 award aids travel and research collaborations of 12-24 weeks at a university in any of Mitacs’ partner countries. Learn more about eligible destinations and award details.

To jumpstart your application:

  1. Talk to your faculty supervisor or SFU International co-op coordinator Amy Lee at icoop@sfu.ca to identify a professor in one of the eligible destinations who works in your research area
  2. Reach out to the professor(s) about your research and hosting your potential project
  3. Apply by following the information below
  4. Please allow 4 months lead time between submitting your application and your desired travel dates

How to apply:

  • Application instructions and materials available on the Mitacs website.
  • Applications require a signature from the SFU Office of Research Services via the SFU Signature Sheet prior to submission to Mitacs:
    • List the SFU Faculty Supervisor as the Principal Investigator. The student should subsequently be listed in parentheses, i.e., "Supervisor Name (Student Name)"
    • SFU Signature Sheets are signed by the SFU Faculty Supervisor, then their Chair/Director, and then their Faculty Dean. Once these signatures are obtained, the SFU Signature Sheet will be sent to SFU ORS for final approval.
    • Once final approval has been granted, SFU ORS will return the signed application documents to the SFU Faculty Supervisor.
  • Applicants should submit completed application packages to SFU’s Mitacs representative Allison Brennan at mitacsbd@sfu.ca.
  • Please note that the “Student Code of Conduct and Ethics” and “International pre-departure form” are NOT required at the time of application, do not complete these forms until results are announced.

Pre departure requirements for successful applicants:

  • If the application is approved, students must complete additional forms before Mitacs will issue the award. Please visit the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website / Scholarships and Awards / Mitacs to download the required forms.
    • Graduate students must complete the “Student Code of Conduct and Ethics,” “International pre-departure form,” and “SFU Independent Graduate Student Research Abroad Preparations Checklist.” Please email completed forms to Deena Coburn at gsdir@sfu.ca to obtain the required SFU signature.
    • Undergraduate students must complete the “Student Code of Conduct and Ethics,” “International pre-departure form.” Please email completed forms to Amy Lee aleer@sfu.ca to obtain the required SFU signature.
  • Please send signed forms to apply@mitacs.ca with copy to mitacsbd@sfu.ca
  • Awards are issued by Mitacs to SFU ORS and set up in the SFU Faculty Supervisor research account. The SFU Faculty Supervisor administers the award to the student as per the terms in the award letter from Mitacs.
