find/resolve service indicators

Service indicators provide or limit access to services for a student. Service indicators appear on the student’s service centre on goSFU and are either positive or negative.

  • Positive service indicators (★) are typically to provide the release of information or documents.

  • Negative service indicators (⦸) can be for various reasons and may impact enrollment and other services.

This page provides an overview of common enrollment hold service indicators, including how to identify and resolve them.

How to find service indicators

If there is a Service Indicator on a student's account, the symbol (★ or ⦸) will show in their Student Service Center. Students can click the indicator to learn more.

Resources in GoSFU for staff include:

  • Service Indicator Report: provides a list of the service indicators impacting your current and incoming students.

Use the search bar or navigate: GoSFU > Main Menu > Records and Enrollment > SFU Records, Dept, GS Queries > SFU Departmental Queries

Click RUN for Service Indicator Report (SFU_DP_17078)

  • Manage Service Indictors: look up a specific student ID to see service indicator details.

Use the search bar or navigation bar:  GoSFU > Main Menu > Campus Community > Person > Manage Service Indicators

Note

A negative service indicator is not always the reason for an enrollment issue.

Check the applicable term(s) to which it applies and use the Manage Service Indictors page to learn more.

Timing: Negative service indicators can prevent enrollment for the term it is valid for AND future terms. In addition, some service indicators are future dated so a negative service indicator is not always the reason for an enrollment issue. For example, if the indicator start term is a future term (i.e. 1261), this will not stop enrollment for 1257.

How to resolve 'enrollment hold' service indictors

Students typically need to resolve these issues themselves - by making payments, submitting documents, or meeting with their program — before they can proceed with enrollment.

Program staff can learn more about a student's service indicator (specific outstanding documentation, applicable terms etc) within goSFU (Student Services Center or Manage Service Indicators).

Timing: enrollment issues should be addressed early in the term to prevent the student from being discontinued, which occurs at the end of week 6.

Common Admission Condition Holds

These holds are typically related to missing documentation, with specific details available in the admission offer letter.

To resolve: students should provide required documentation and/or meet the condition specified within the time frame indicated.

  • C40/41 – official transcripts required
  • C42 – SFU degree completion required
  • C43 – English scores meeting university minimums required
  • C44 – Unmet course/CGPA requirements

Financial Holds

These holds indicate a balance owing, which can be seen on the student account.

To resolve: student must pay outstanding balance or create a payment plan with student accounts. Grad Studies cannot remove this hold, but can confirm if an award payment is scheduled that will elimate the balance owing. Direct the student to Student Accounts.

  • D01, D40 - balance owing (can be paid in goSFU)
  • DWO - delinquent account (cannot be paid in goSFU)

Common Administrative/Academic Holds

  • C08 - Custom Confirmation of Enrollment letter. Note: this occurs when a student is on a time extension. They must request a custom confirmation of enrollment letter and should submit a ticket to Graduate Studies.
  • C09 - normal program time limit has expired. To resolve: student should refer to the applicable GGR and use the time limit extension form. If granted the start term of the C09 will move to end of their extension period.
  • C56 - Unsatisfactory Progress. To resolve: contact the Academic Graduate Student Support Specialist in Graduate Studies for options.
  • C39 - WDA/ VRS/ Non-degree. To resolve: this blocks enrollment for a non-intended term, contact Graduate Studies if this hold is believed to be in error.
