Templates

The headlines, content and templates found here can be used in multiple ways. You can:

  • use the content for email campaigns
  • use the content for your website/landing page
  • attach pdf's to an email
  • make pdf's downloadable from your website
  • print and hand them out

You might use any of the headlines or copy as is, or perhaps you might adjust it slightly to better suit your faculty, department, program.

Creating your own headlines and copy

We encourage you to work on copy and headlines that speak to your target audience. Brainstorm and ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is unique/special about our faculty/department/unit?
  • What does our faculty/department/unit do better or differently from a similar faculty/department/unit?
  • Why would a student want to join our faculty/department/unit?
  • What are the benefits of getting a credential from our faculty/department/unit?
  • What do students who complete from our faculty/department/unit go on to do afterward?
  • What is the overall feeling you want current/potential students to feel about our faculty/department/unit?
  • Are there some areas of research or some researchers that are a particular draw for our faculty/department/unit?

After brainstorming, you'll want to put together a descriptive paragraph or two that helps to capture the essence of your faculty/department/unit. You'll want to be:

  • Positive
  • Friendly/Welcoming
  • Confident
  • Conversational
  • Concise

Use short, simple sentences in an active voice (e.g. Use: "Bring your documents to our office." instead of "Your documents should be brought to our office.")

Use plain language. Not all who read your copy are native-English speakers and some people with disabilities need to use text to voice tools.

If you'd like for our office to review your headlines and copy, please email Stacey Makortoff: sam32@sfu.ca.

Don't forget your Call To Action (CTA)

You've created this beautiful marketing piece and you want it to be successful. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What does being successful with this piece mean?
  • What do you want people to do after reading this material?
  • Do you want people to visit your website?
  • Apply by a deadline?
  • Contact you for information?
  • Something else?

Your marketing piece (email, pdf, website, etc.) should have a clear CTA with the appropriate means for people to follow through.

How to Use the Template to Create a PDF

We have three InDesign file templates: Grad Studies Overview, Faculty or Dept/Program. Use the headlines and copy from this page in the placeholders built into the template. You can combine two pdf's into one document (to become a 2-pager, back-to-back pdf) if you wish.

If you don't have InDesign, or require some assistance putting together your PDF, please send an email to Stacey Makortoff: sam32@sfu.ca.
