Languages, Cultures and Literacies doctoral student in the Faculty of Education

Juliana Kumbartzki Ferreira is an International Student Advisor at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), Brazil, and a PhD student at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Canada. At UFSC, she coordinates the largest and most traditional Brazilian program for international cooperation in H.E., Programa Estudante Convênio de Graduação (PEC-G), providing academic advising and support to undergraduate students from 62 developing countries. She is also a member of the university's Affirmative Action Committee. Her research interests focus on how international students' voices and experiences can inform the ways in which we understand and practice internationalization in more socially just ways.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?

I chose SFU because of the LCL Program and Dr. Kumari Beck's work on the Internationalization of Higher Education from a multicultural and anti-racist perspective.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

I am interested in the lived experiences of post-secondary international students in Canada, and how their voices can inform more socially just ways to internationalize Higher Education.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?

I am amazed by how my professors are generous and caring towards the students during these unprecedented times we are living.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.

I have received a SGES and Research Assistantship.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROGRAM/POSTDOC POSITION TO SOMEONE STILL SEARCHING FOR A PROGRAM OR POSTDOC POSITION?

LCL is all about community building, critical and qualitative approaches to educational research and Social Justice.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE?

I am part of the "Covid Cohort". I completed my first year entirely online and can't wait to finally enter Canada (Oct 27), meet my professors and colleagues face to face, and get to enjoy the Campus.
