April 18, 2024

The Confederation of University Faculty Associations of British Columbia (CUFA BC) has announced the recipients of the 2024 Distinguished Academics Awards, including Sigidimnak Noxs Ts'aawit Dr. Amy Parent, honoured with the Ehor Boyanowsky Academic of the Year Award.

Since its inception in 1995, the CUFA BC Distinguished Academics Awards series has celebrated faculty members whose work extends beyond the confines of academia, making meaningful contributions to the broader community. These scholars are recognized for their research, which advances knowledge and underscores the importance and relevance of university-based inquiry for the public good. Within British Columbia, research universities serve as vital hubs for social, intellectual, and economic innovation.

Sigidimnak Noxs Ts'aawit Dr. Amy Parent, an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Indigenous Education & Governance, has been honoured with this award for her project titled “Raising Nisga’a Language, Sovereignty, and Land-Based Education Through Traditional Carving knowledge.”

This groundbreaking initiative achieved an international milestone by facilitating the rematriation of the Ni'isjoohl memorial totem pole from Scotland. Dr. Parent's work has expanded the scope of Indigenous methodologies and governance and contributed to decolonizing museum practices and fostering partnerships for decolonization and reconciliation. Additionally, her research has played a crucial role in sharing knowledge and advancing the discourse on Indigenous education and governance.

Dr. Parent is honoured alongisde Drs. Sean Irwin (Royal Roads University) and Francis Juanes (University of Victoria), respectively.
