Room Assignment

Your Offer

Your offer is to a building type based on your preferences along with what type of rooms are available and your eligibility.

  • We will make an offer for housing for an available room type for which you are eligible even if it is not in your preferences under the assumption that your need for on-campus housing trumps the type of room we can offer you for single student housing.  
    • For Family Housing, offers will only be made to preferences you have selected in your applications.           
  • Once you accept an offer, you can also put your name on an offer modification wait list through the portal for a different room type. As and if spaces open up prior to move in, we will review the offer modification wait list and send out room changes as we can.
  • After move in you can also submit a room switch request should a space in your preferred room type.

Townhouse Roommate Groups

Once you have accepted an offer for townhouses, you can create roommate groups with other students with accepted offers. Roommate groups will be placed first and we will do our best to accommodate all roommate groups made prior to placement.

  • Fall: by June 1 for room selection
  • Spring: by November 1: note: roommate groups are unlikely due to the nature of vacancies from Fall to Spring
  • Summer: by February 15

Gender Specific Floors

Review the Undergraduate Housing Table:

Gender specific floors mean that only students that identify as that gender will be placed on the floor. It does not mean that the residents of the floor will not have guests of the other gender on the floor.

All our rooms are private single rooms (no roommates). This way our residence is primarily gender inclusive.

Accessible Rooms

Rooms with accessibility features are held until later placement to ensure availability for residents as identified through the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL).

If you require specific room placement or features, please connect with CAL for your assessment as early as possible. CAL will make recommednations to Residence.

Super Singles

There are a limited number of larger units in Shell House and North Towers.

  • These super singles will be available 

Graduate and Family Housing Building

  • 23 studio units
  • 13 one-bedroom units
  • 52 two-bedroom units
  • Offers are made throughout the year as units come vacant based on your application date
  • Offers will only be made to units that you have indicated as your preference
  • Current residents have until June 1 to renew for the upcoming year

Room Selection

Fall room selection is done through MyPlace@SFU. Selection dates are rolling and outlined below.

  • You do not need to participate in room selection. If you do not select a room, a room will be assigned to you.
  • Once room selection ends no roommate groups or room selection requests can be accommodated as we will be placing all remaining students in available rooms.

Please note that due to room placement and building availability, there is no room selection option for Spring and Summer terms.

Room Assignment

  • Fall placement: starts after room selection (late June)
  • Spring placement (new residents): starts in late October
  • Summer placement: starts in late February
  • Family Housing (Parcel 21 building): ongoing based on vacancy

How to : Fall room Selection

5 steps

  1. Review the open dates below for your room selection time.
  2. Log into your MyPlace@SFU and select room selection from the top bar or side bar
  3. Choose your building or townhouse block from the options
  4. Choose your floor or specific townhouse from the available options, (you can adjust the filters on the side to narrow your choices)
  5. Assign yourself to a specific room. If you have roommates for your townhouse, you will be able to assign your confirmed roommates at this time

*Choose wisely. Once you have selected, we will not make changes if you change your mind. HINT: you can review floor plans in Housing Options.

  • Room selection is first come-first served
  • Room selection opens at 9 am PST on the dates below
  • Only rooms that are available for room selection or not already selected will show for your selection
  • Only rooms that match your offer type will be available for you to select from
  • Make sure to follow the instructions and make your room selection carefully.  Once you select your room, you will not be able to change your selection
  • Gender specific floors apply only to residents living on that floor and not to their guests or visitors.

Spring and Summer Terms

For spring and summer term placements and those not participating in fall room selection, placement is done according to accepted offer and availability.

Fall placement: Starts after room selection (late June)
Spring placement (new residents): Starts in late October
Summer placement: Starts in late February
Graduate and Famiy Housing: Ongoing based on vacancy

If you are eligible to select your own room, you may login to the MyPlace@SFU starting at 9 am PST on the dates noted above to select your room. Any one who has not room selected will be placed in an available room.

Room selection will only be available to students with a confirmed housing offer (i.e. students who have accepted their contract and paid the $700 deposit) by room selection. Students making their confirmation payment after this date will be allocated to an available room after room selection.

Students who do not select their own room during the scheduled dates OR students who confirmed for Residence after the dates above, will have their rooms assigned to them by the Student Occupancy team. If you have any questions, please email
