Fall 2027: New Room Options

A double room is a shared room for two students. Beginning in Fall 2027, select North Tower rooms will be configured with two beds, two study spaces, fridge space for two, and storage for each resident. Students living in double rooms will be part of the same residence community as other North Tower residents, including access to shared communal washrooms and the residence meal plan.

Double rooms will be the most affordable student housing option available at SFU.

Residence fees for Fall 2027 – Summer 2028 will be confirmed and posted via SFU’s student housing website by December 1, 2026. All residence fee information, including the new North Tower Double room rate, will be posted and available before room offers are sent.

Double rooms are an option for all undergraduate students. A double/shared room is a great opportunity for students interested in a shared living experience. Double rooms are located in North Tower residences where a meal plan is included as part of the residence package. Eligible students will be able to indicate their interest in a double room during the residence application process, subject to availability.

Students will be able to select or indicate room preferences as part of the residence application process when they you submit an application through your MyPlace@SFU Housing Portal

Double rooms will be located in two of the three North Tower residence buildings: Deloris & Jack Shadbolt House, and Barbara Rae House.  

Students who prefer a private single room will continue to have the opportunity to indicate this preference during the housing application process. Double rooms are being introduced to increase living options for students to choose from. As with all residence assignments, room preferences are subject to availability.

Residence and Housing is introducing double rooms to expand the range of housing options available to students. This provides students with a more affordable residence option and an opportunity to live with a roommate and build connections from the day they move-in. Double rooms will complement existing residence offerings by providing additional choice for students. First year students are guaranteed housing at SFU if they submit an application to housing by May 1 of each year, regardless of room preference.

Students will continue to have access to a variety of residence room types, including private single rooms, shared housing and apartment style housing. SFU has single rooms for all students who choose this option. Availability of all room types will continue to be subject to demand and occupancy levels.

Students can provide up to three preferences for their housing and room type during the application process. Students can also update their room-type preferences at any time during the application process and as additional information becomes available. We encourage students to submit their residence application as early as possible, as offer priority is based on your application submission date. Applicants who apply earlier generally have a better chance of receiving their preferred room type, although all assignments remain subject to availability.

Many students will be sharing a room for the first time. Residence Life staff will provide resources, guidance and support to help students build positive roommate relationships and navigate shared living expectations throughout the year.

Once you have accepted an offer for a double room, you can create roommate groups with other students with accepted offers. Roommate groups will be placed first and we will do our best to accommodate all roommate groups made prior to placement.

You will only be paired with a roommate if you select a preference for a double room. If your preference is for a private room, then select “private, single room” during the application process.  A reminder that you can choose up to three different housing preferences in your housing application. We understand that living situations can evolve. Students experiencing concerns with community living will have access to support from Residence Life staff with established training in peer support and conflict-resolution processes.

Requests for room changes are considered on a case-by-case basis and are subject to availability and applicable housing policies. More information about room switch can be found here.
