FIRST YEAR ELIGIBILITY AND PRIORITY HOUSING

Learn about the requirements to live in residence and whether you may qualify for priority housing consideration. Housing offers are based on eligibility, priority criteria, and application completion dates. We encourage students to apply as early as possible, as residence spaces are limited.

Guaranteed Housing

First Year Guarantee for Fall and Spring term (September to April) 

Students entering SFU directly from high school are eligible for guaranteed housing for Fall and Spring (September to April) To be eligible for SFU’s First Year Guarantee you must: 

  • Apply for SFU on campus student housing by May 1
  • Accept your SFU admission offer by May 1
  • You confirm that you are eligible to live in residence. See below
  • Be entering SFU directly from high school without completing post-secondary studies after graduation
  • If you apply after May 1, you can still apply for residence, but your application will be considered through the regular application process

Eligibility

Eligibility requirement

To move into on campus student housing at SFU or to be eligible to continue living in SFU’s residence community the following term, you must meet all 3 conditions / requirements below. Note that these conditions and requirements apply to ALL SFU and FIC students.

  1. You must be an SFU or FIC student
  2. You cannot have any overdue fees to SFU or FIC including tuition and residence fees
  3. You must meet one (1) of the following three (3) criteria. You are an:
    • SFU undergraduate student 
      1. Maintain full-time enrolment registered in at least 9 credit hours or equivalent for Fall and Spring terms (see Summer Housing exceptions or part-time enrollment exceptions in the Residence Handbook) or
      2. Be enrolled in an SFU registered co-op work term or the Back on Track Program
    • FIC student
      1. Maintain full-time enrolment for each term that you are living in residence

Priority Housing

Some SFU students who apply to residence qualify for Priority Housing Offer.

You must be eligible to receive an offer:

  • admitted to SFU
  • have no financial holds on your student account
  • have a completed application for housing

And Meet one of the following:

  1. Indigenous students: students admitted to SFU who are First Nations, (Status or Non-Status), Metis or Inuit
  2. Current or former BC Youth in Care
  3. SFU Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship Recipients (USES,UGGLA) and Student Athletes on a Full-ride Scholarship
  4. SFU WUSC Student Refugee Program
  5. New students with a disability or ongoing medical condition that significantly affects your housing needs (Students complete an Accessibility Accommodation request in their application process and will then be asked to provide additional information demonstrating eligibility to be reviewed by the Centre for Accessible Learning)
  6. FALL INTAKE: Current residents (Fall/Spring) that are under 19 years of age by July 1 for the upcoming Fall term and have applied by February 1

Note: Priority Offers are based on available inventory when the application is completed (i.e. not the same as priority placement).

You must meet the following requirements:

  • You are eligible to live in residence
  • Your application to SFU Housing is completed before May 1 (this generally means that you have completed your housing application prior to receiving your SFU admission offer)
  • You have accepted your SFU offer of admission by May 1
  • You are entering SFU directly from high school (i.e. you have not completed any post-secondary coursework since graduating)
