Residence is expanding

We’re growing and that means big things for all residents. More amenities and common spaces. More programming opportunities for students to grow, develop and enjoy. More room to house more students. The Residence and Housing Master Plan outlines five (5) phases of new housing on the Burnaby Mountain campus. Phase 1, which is expected to open for the January 2021 term, will provide an additional 482 beds for residents. This construction as well as the ongoing renovation and maintenance to our current buildings will help us continue to provide living learning environments that are safe, attractive, well maintained, comfortable and welcoming all aimed at creating successful student experiences.

Hours of construction

Construction within residences follows the city of Burnaby construction bylaws. Constructions hours will be as follows:

  • Monday-Friday: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Burnaby Noise or Abatement, by-law: Number 7332, - page 5: 15.(1)

Subject to subsections (2) and (4), no person shall carry or cause to be carried on any works in connection with the construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair or demolition of any building, structure, improvement or other thing

  • (a) before 7:00 a.m. or after 8:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday;
  • (b) before 9:00 a.m. or after 8:00 p.m. on Saturday;
  • (c) at any time on Sunday or any statutory holiday.

Your safety

Due to various construction activities around the residence area, there are a number of construction zones that will impact pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

  • Please be cautious and aware around these construction zones
  • The Fire Lane is closed to pedestrians and limited to authorized service and emergency vehicles only. 
  • Watch for hazards and obey signage and/or instructions from flag persons
  • Do not enter any closed areas

Phase 1: Two new residence buildings

Time frame:  Fall 2018 - Spring 2021 
Hours of Work (in compliance with the Burnaby Noise or Sound Abatement Bylaw 1979)
Expected noise and disruption Expect to hear varying amounts of noise.  Pedestrian and vehicle routes will be disrupted in various ways at various times.  

Phase 1 will see the building of a 7-storey and an 8-storey building with a total of 482 single occupancy rooms for first year students. Phase 1 will feature traditional-style residence halls with single occupancy rooms, common bath facilities, lounge and study spaces on each floor, and a common house lounge. Each building will provide kitchenettes in the floor lounges and a shared kitchen in the house lounge.


Monday, May 6:

There will be higher levels of noise throughout the day as construction trucks will be using the fire lane. Fire Lane Access between Hamilton Hall and the Towers is limited to only authorized service and emergency vehicles. There is no pedestrian access. There will be no access for deliveries or to park your vehicle. Please be aware of the re-direct signs regarding closures of pathways and roads.

The Greenspace project will create a paved, accessible pathway running from the front entrance of Shell House down to McTaggart. The project also includes drainage improvements, pathway lighting, greenspace landscaping and planting (mix of lawn, grasses, groundcover and shrubs) and gathering spaces with amenities (tables, benches, basketball hoops)

Phase 2: Student Housing and Services

Former Madge Hogarth House Location
Time frame:   Fall 2019 - Fall 2022 (Estimated Completion)
Hours of work (in compliance with the Burnaby Noise or Sound Abatement Bylaw 1979)

Phase 2 will play a significant role in community engagement, student citizenship, and student academic success. This new residence community will provide space for programming to promote and welcome students, provide lively, public spaces for all students, rooms for socializing, and flexible spaces for bringing the academic experience closer to the resident community experience. Phase 2 will also include short-term accommodations for visitors to campus and a centrally located office suite which will be built to accommodate the Residence and Housing staff and centralize services for residents.

Addition of new two-storey living room space for residents living in all 3 Towers providing more amenity and community space to engage with the resident community. The new Living Room additions at SFU will be located in the courtyards of each of the existing Towers first-year student residence buildings: the Pauline Jewett residence, Barbara Rae residence and the Doris and Jack Shadbolt residence. Three new entrance pavilions will be added to the previously inaccessible north sides of each building.
