Literacies, Texts and Languages (LTL) explores the processes, tools, and social practices people use every day to make meaning of texts, including literature, graphic novels, oral stories, songs, dances, policy documents, social media posts, various genres of non-fiction and academic writing, popular television and film, toys, podcasts, picture books, and video games.
Faculty members in this area use critical, theoretical, and qualitative approaches to research literacies and language education in K–12 classrooms, post-secondary academic settings, popular culture, and within communities involving learners of all ages.
As a doctoral student focused on LTL, you will explore how texts, languages, and literacies shape learning, identity, culture, communication, and participation across educational and community contexts.
Research topics and course themes include:
- Academic literacies/academic writing
- Algorithmic, digital and new media literacies
- Children's literature and media
- Creative and non-fiction literacies
- Indigenous literacies and storytelling
- K–12 language arts pedagogies
- Literacies in communities/adult literacies
- Pop culture literacies
- Racial literacies
- Teaching additional languages
- Writing children’s literature/oral storytelling
