SFU Science recognizes 2023 Outreach Awards recipients

SFU Faculty of Science is proud to announce the 2023 recipients of the Excellence in Science Public Engagement and Outreach Awards. These annual awards recognize SFU faculty, staff and students who dedicate their time to communicating scientific research to the public and policymakers, through a diverse range of outreach activities.

Faculty/Staff Category

Lynne Quarmby, Faculty, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry

Quarmby is a passionate advocate for basic research, women in science and evidence-based policy in public lectures, classroom visits, panels and interviews. She is also a prolific writer of book reviews, literary essays and opinion pieces. Her book, Watermelon Snow (McGill-Queens University Press, 2020), which weaves cell biology and climate science into a personal story, was recognized by the American Library Association as an Outstanding Academic Title.

Student Category

Yu Yen Pan, Graduate Student, Earth Sciences

Pan has led an impressive number of outreach activities in English and Mandarin, including a bilingual YouTube channel, curating a museum exhibit, classroom workshops and participation in events such as Meet an SFU Scientist and Skype a Scientist. Her Ph.D. research on natural hazards communication has involved extensive engagement in person, online and in workshops, interviews, and surveys with Emergency managers and community members across BC.

Science Communication and Policy Impact

Barbara Sanders, Faculty, Actuarial Science

Sanders regularly shares her expertise about pension plans and policy through a variety of different industry publications, presentations, webcasts and podcasts for non-academic audiences as well as industry panels and consultations with policymakers in various provinces. Her commitment to clear and accessible communication of her research has had significant impact on pension policy discussions across Canada.
