DERIVATIVE SECURITIES PRESENTATIONS LINKS PAGE

This page contains past copies of the slide shows that BUS 492/BUS 419/ECON 818 students used in the group presentations. In the process of doing the presentations, the students examined the key financial statements for the firm. These may have been done separately as overheads (as there may have been so much information that it is hard to get onto a slide). When not included in the slides, this information can be obtained directly from the company websites.

Thanks to all the past students who have contributed to this page with the excellent projects that were done.

Directions to Students
For purposes of assessing the corporation's use of derivative securities, in addition to the standard accounting statements -- the balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement -- examination of the financial statements also includes the management's risk management statement, which is included in the management discussion and analysis section of the annual report for firms filing 10-K (or annual report for non-US firms). Also of importance are the notes to the final statements detailing the firm's use of specific derivative securities. Other sections of the annual report might also be examined to determine the organizational struture which the firm uses to handle risk management -- e.g., is the risk management decision process centered on a subcommittee of the board?

An alternative to the annual report as a source of information is the 10-K and related filings that are made to the SEC. This source is only relevant if the firm is publicly traded on US securities markets. Information about the compensation paid to senior executives is detailed in the proxy statement (again for US firms) related to the firm's annual shareholders meeting. All the information is obtainable by using the "Investor Relations" link on the company's website.
